30mpg from a 4runner?

my buddy over on the coast has an 85' truck with a stock toyota diesel, 36's and 5.29's and he gets 42mpg, he has sources that pay him to take the used fry oil and he makes his own fuel. so he is running his truck for free...... i hate some people haha plus he can accelerate up hill in 5th gear. bas****.....

Can you give exact details (or pics) on what emmisions stuff you yanked out? My Yota Mechanic told me to do the same thing to get the most mpg's outa my 22RE. Do you have any other mods on that engine? Bored over? LCE Heads? ect?

I would love to get ahold of a 2L-T and run Bio on it. My ultimate goal is to do a diesel swap. But for now (and probably for quite a while) my Runner is my DD and 22mpg with the 22RE will have to do. Not that Im complaining, but would love to squeeze a little more mpg out of her until she kicks the bucket.
 
when my 22re kicks it (so a long time from now) i will upgrade to a diesel for sure and run bio fuel. one day....
 
I also have an '86 toyo 2wd pick-up with the same motor, also in my '85 4runner. With the huge difference in weight, being lower to the ground, smooth driving tires, and being as well tuned as it can possibly be, 30 mpg is still a bit out of reach for me. 28....can do, 30...maybe in ideal highway conditions doing 55mph, you could do 30 or 30+ but not doing over 55mph.
So, in a 4runner there is no way in H-E-double hockey sticks, you can get 30mpg with the 22re or 22r engine.
 
:-/ o really? hhmmmm..... ill actually be headed over your way tomorrow morning, ill end up near newport. i might have to look into that place. you have any more info on that place? if its 5 grand thats almost worth it. i think it would be fun to do it myself but that would save me a head ache!
 
5k is really not that bad if you are talking rebuild, installed, and warrantied for a few years. I would much rather put that much money toward a 4Runner than a brand new car. That's just me though...

im sure 5k is just to swap a used old engine in and wire it up if you want a rebuild and warranty youll be looking at 10k easy.
 
i can rebuild it myself, id pay 5k for them to swap it in and do all the wiring. i have more of a chance at screwing it up then they would since they have done it time and time again.
 
Yeah 10K for a rebuild/swap with warranty sounds more like it. 5k for just the swap isn't all that bad though coinsidering dieseltoys.com charges 20k...

Nate, there you go again making me glad I stayed stock with my engine (LOL)! I'm sure mine's going to stink on mileage, too, until I get those 5.29's that were intended for the munchkin engine replaced with something like 4.56's (but that won't be until I swap in a 4.7 T-case sometime down the road).
