30mpg from a 4runner?

lol im sorry its just the realistic part that dampers your cravings.
i was looking at diesel swaps and the most economical one i found was the GM 6.2 or 6.5turbo
they are both cheap easy to find and are standard chevy v8 tranny bell housing mates so you can ether put a 700r4 tranny in your yota or use the advanced adapters bellhousing conversion kit.
the gm 6.2 was like 1500 bucks to do and the 6.5t was around 3,000

i tore out the emissions and blocked off the EGR with a plate re rerouted the some of the vacuum lines off the spider valve.
been 2 tanks of gas and average of 28 now.

Can you go into detail about what lines you blocked off and maybe some pictures? Sounds easy enough and I would do about anything for better gas mileage.

I had an 89' that I took all the emissions out. I only drove to and from trails, not a dd. 37" mtr's and 5.29 R&P. i constantly got 25-28 mpg on my 22re. loved that truck

Once all the emissions stuff is removed is it still a legal DD? Or does it depend on state regs? When I lived in WV we had yearly inspections which covered emissions, but down here in SC there are no required inspections. So in SC I would be good to go having a DD without the emmision stuff right?

my state doesnt emissions test, im gunna go ahead guess but im sure if your tested you wont pass when removing the emissions.

cheaper to pick up a car for better mpg. i get 32+ in my 24 year old honda!! cant even get that with any 2012 4 cylinder without having to try. i can drive mine however i want and still get awesome MPG

i have to machine plates for the block offs and i dont have any stocked right now, so when he gets back ill be right on it....SORRY guys so much work so little time.
most of my time is spent on the locking center console that is direct fit.

About 2 years ago, I owned a 1997 VW Passat Wagon TDI that averaged 45mpgs on the highway, and could cover over 800 miles on one tank! This 4runner seems like it might be able to make 300 miles on a tank, with some mods and whatnot, but a truck this heavy isn't made for MPG's (my best so far is 17.3).
I would be interested to know more about the VW TDI swap into a 4runner. I will do some searching on tdiclub.com and report back.
How difficult is it to find a toyota turbodiesel motor from overseas? Anyone out there have one? Does it mate up to a 3.0 transmission?

Here is one thread about a guy swapping a VW TDI into a 93 4runner 3.0. Looks like the transmission from the 22re bolts on with an adapter kit. Lots of cool photos.

My 1995 4runner with a 22re 5 speed is getting just 30 MPG going from Vancouver to whistler. And I do this trip constantly to go biking up there. Around the city with a mix of driving from highway to suburbs I'm getting about 400km to a tank. On 31" Yokohama geolander tires. I just don't have a lead foot

Eric, If my math serves me right 400km is 248.55miles, and assuming you have a 15 gallon tank, that is only 16mpgs... I dont see how it's possible to go from 16mpgs (mixed) to 30mpgs (highway)? I'm not trying to call you out, just seems odd...

Did you mean to say you get 400miles per tank? That would be 27mpgs (mixed) and 30mpgs (highway) which makes more since... Also, did you correct your speedo gears or regear your rearend after putting 31's on?

I get about 370miles per tank, mixed driving, in my '87 22re 5spd, so just under 25mpgs. The best Ive ever done was 27mpgs driving from the Chesapeake Bay down the coastline to Charleston, SC on US Hwy 17 never going above 60mph.

That's quite interesting. A turbodiesel with a w56 and duals behind it would be the shiznit... you could climb a cliff wall if you had the tires for it.
