33 mpg?

Also, as others have pointed out, a sudden drop in MPG can indicate a problem elsewhere, so I consider it a good part of routine maintenance.

I have a log book I keep in my truck. Shows every fill-up with gas mileage and gallons...shows all repairs and oil changes...basically anything I do to the truck. I've been doing that for 35 years now. My wife does it too.

Nice to know I'm not the only compulsive MPG geek out there. :D

I actually keep log books of every fill up where I enter the following info:

Date
Odometer reading
Gallons taken
Price per gallon
MPG (hand calculated)
Oil checked Y/N

And that's why I can tell you that the last time I bought gas for < $1/gallon was in 2002. ;)

This is not a highway downhill coasting pic. It was my commute from the countryside to home, city driving included a little. It read 35 mpg on the downhill bits.

How long has it been since you reset your computer? If it was just prior to taking that picture it hasn't gotten enough data to accurately display your average MPG. Take the tank down till the light comes on and fill the tank. Write down the total amount of fuel and reset the trip odometer. Drive till it's empty and divide the number on your trip by the amount of fuel you put in. There's honestly no other way I would believe you got 500+ miles out of a single tank of gas.

I reset it every tank of fuel. Last tank the read out was 35.2 mpg when I "figured" it did 33.7. Again though, if 22 gallons is how many it took and 17.3 is when the first click happened, the 33 would turn into 26 in reality. I think I'm going to fill it up again and see how much it takes on top of the click to see if I really could get in a whole lot more fuel.

Either I am a really aggressive driver, or my bad wheel bearing is a lot worse than I thought, lol. I get around 15-18 mpg average, 15 being when I think I'm being aggressive, and 18 when I drive normally.

Yes, you can! The gas nozzle in some fuel stations clicks off prematurely, and then I can get an additional 10 liters (about 3 US gallons) into the tank before it is really full! I have this regularly and need a lot of extra time to fill the tank by hand (=holding the nozzle, slowly filling the tank :zoom:).

Don't know about yall but I never fill past the click anymore. Yes, sometimes the nozzle clicks prematurely but most of the time it's just fine. Besides, I've heard that overfilling your tank is not good, because gasoline expands in heat and you don't want it spilling out while driving.

Back to OP, perhaps you just had some crazy tail wind following you the whole way? lol I've never gotten that high before. Best I had was 21 mpg all highway at 75-80 cruise.

Though, if you really did cruise at 55-60, I would imagine much better mpg.

Sounds like we've got our first T4R hypermiler! :driving:

I do inadvertently hypermile on my journeys, I used to see over 38 mpg on my 3VZ Camry because of that. Usually I cruise at 55 ish but go to 60 on downhills and around 50 on uphills. I'm always the one getting passed obviously, but speed limit is 55 for me, so I don't want to be the one getting a ticket. Might help explain as well :)

You sir might be ready for the next step.

Here is the link to the Guinness World Record Application: Individual Application

If you can continually repeat your feat I think you might be able to set the 4Runner record.

You were driving 45 on the freeway? You are lucky to be here today. I'm glad I was not behind you.

He's a little shy of the 12,000mpg record...

It's a lot different in Hawai'i vs. anywhere else. Part of my commute everyday involves a long stretch of highway that has a 45 mph speed limit.

Other than that though, I completely agree, I used to live near L.A. and anything less than 80 mph was a death sentence.

My 2007 V8 is tuned, runs Redline synthetic in the diffs, I'm easy on the throttle on long trips and even with a tailwind in Wyoming, the best I could do on a long trip, measured by actual fill ups and not the computer is a little over 20.5 MPG.

I usually average 19 mpg on the hwy in Colorado with summer fuel and about 17 in the city.

In the winter, the mileage drops to 18 on the hwy and 15 mpg around town.

These are the actual mpg observations and I'm sticking to it!

Dang, I didn't realize that was in Hawai'i. I would agree to drive 30 on the highway and run the risk of whatever to trade places with you.

"Official" mileage.

Alright guys, I did a run and here's how it came out. I know no one thinks it's possible, but I was curious just for myself so I set out over the last couple days to test it out. I'm off work and I have nothing better to do.

I started with a full tank (definitely full, up to the top of the filler neck). I know it's bad, but it was the only way to figure real gallons used. Besides, right after I topped off the tank, I set off and burned it off.

I also have a Garmin Nuvi GPS that records my distance travelled too.

Truck is a 2003 2wd Sport V8 w/170,000 miles with stock wheels and Bridgestone Dueller R/T tires at 40 psi. Synthetic Mobil 1 motor oil, trans oil, diff oil, power steering oil etc and also a 25/75% coolant/water mixture (cools better than 50/50 coolant). I live in Hawai'i, I never need the antifreeze properties of coolant. Truck also has no backseats and no spare tire (I use it like a station wagon practically).

Average speed according to the 4runner computer = 34 mph, (34.5 for gps).

Miles travelled according to the odometer 318 miles (177,650 - 177,332). (323.3 indicated on gps).

Mpg according to computer = 26.8

After topping off again to the very top, gallons used = 12.53.

Mpg achieved according to the odometer = 25.3 GPS = 25.8

So, definitely not 33 mpg but not bad. I also had made a lot more stops than before ("cold" starts too, as well as hit traffic occasionally). I'd say that with a constant cruise at 45 - 55 mph that mileage might be in the 26-28 range and if everything was in tip top shape and the truck was lowered slightly or a tailwind was in order, 30 is definitely for a hypermiler. Of course with other aero mods more might be possible, but whatever, I didn't buy it for fuel mileage.

Either or, for whoever wanted to know, that's how it went for me.
