35in tires

Ok I know this is beat to death....but I dont have a ton of time to research before I make a decision. Just got a nail in my sidewall and need new tires. thinking I will jump up to 35's so I have a couple of questions.
1. Discount tires is where I am buying as I get a new one for my damaged one. Nitto Terra Grapplers, BFG AT, BFG KM2
2. I have toytec ultimate 3 in lift. How much body lift would I need?

This is my DD but I do like to do trails in it. Not any rock crawling as there is not much where I live. The reason for the hurry and lack of time to do due diligence is AT for the guard is next week. I need to give Discount tires lead time to get tires and between 50-60 hrs at work and a college course prep for AT, I am tapped for time.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks fella's

I say get the tires first, hammer your pinch welds and see how much you need to trim. If you're set on a body lift you're looking at 1.5"-2". You could also just swap your rear springs to some taller coils and crank your coilovers up a little bit instead of installing a body lift. Go for some OME 861 or 851 or even just some LC 8 or 9 wraps

like downpour stated it just depends on how much you want to trim. and the easiest way of doing that is once you get your tires take out your coilovers and put your tire back on and jack up the lower a arm and turn the wheel back and forth and trim your pinch weld until you dont rub anymore!

You're also prob going to run into some fender flare issues and rear bumper issues that will require trimming. Or you'll need to remove your rear bumper if it's still stock.

If you're dead set on a bodylift then 2" would be a good number. I have a 2" and I still had to trim a good portion. Keep in mind you might also need spacers depending on your current wheel's backspacing to keep the tire from hitting the UCA's and spacers tend to cause more rubbing issues with the pinch weld. An alignment to push your caster more forward (about +2-2.5) will help.

With as much of a friendly tone as I can be... I would highly suggest not going to 35's at this point in time.

Had I known the pains of going to 35's as I've experienced first hand, I likely wouldn't have done it. There is a significant amount of pounding, cutting, welding, spacing, etc that does take a lot of time, and needs to be researched. There are many other items needed to supplement the 35's on our rigs. What is the backspace & width of your current wheels? Do you have UCA's for clearance?

In addition to just the tires and body lift, are you supercharged and/or are you willing to buy gears (which might mean lockers??) at the same time? I find the 4runner to be un-driveable without either one of these... Even with the supercharger, after getting the 35's, I bought gears the next month, after finding that I could hardly use 4th gear anymore.

I think a 33 is the better suited tire :)

I had one of the tallest Runners on here with 35's and STILL rubbed. On pavement. Go 33's like everyone else because that's what we know works.

What is the backspacing on your rims, and what size tires do you have now? Are you running spacers?

If you have stock rims, you're going to NEED spacers.

Ho I can run a 37/12.50/16.5 with no spacers , get 35s mounted to my stock rims, and rub the hell out of my UCA, is because of the backspacing.

My Spidertrax should be here Monday. If you can wait that long, I'll post up Pics and details, rubbage, ect ect...

I know guys run 35's on here but I think 33's are really the most appropriate tire for this vehicle. I toyed with the idea of 35's but after doing research in what it required I decided not to. Plus after intimately working on the suspension and axles of this truck I feel the added stress and weight outweigh the performance gains.

I opted for gears, dual ARBs, and a winch. I can go anwhere I need and if I can't then i've outgrown this truck and it's time for a SAS or a crawler.

I have KMC XD Revolvers, 18x9, 4.53 backspacing and Light Racing UCA's as well I have th Tundra 231 brake mod. I hope this helps with some of the answers?

I really appreciate all the help! I wish I could figure out how to do the multiple quote reply! lol that would be very helpful skill. Us old guys have trouble with these fancy computers...haha

Thanks again for all the help!

You're going to need some 1.25" wheel spacers.

You can't wheel these trucks on the east coast on 35's with stock CV's without snapping them. Although, the 120 platform handles 35's really well.

But our platform as well as the 1st gen Tacomas have CV axles that are nearly half the size where it counts.

Out west where traction is abundant on the dry rocks it can be done.

Over here where wheel speed matters when it is typically moist the CV's don't last.

I agree with the other that said stick with 33s. You need to plan out having 35s before you jump in without any time to do anything. It's your DD.. I would not be on 35s if it was my DD, period. 33s are way more practical for you at this point right now. You can always sell your 33s in a few months when you have time to set your truck up for 35s. Or you could buy used 33s to get you by until you have more time. In the end, it's your truck to do with what you will, but you did ask us for a reason.

I was able to fit my 35s, on a 1" body lift, without tubbing the firewall (only pounded in with a hammer), on stock UCAs, 1.25" wheel spacers, and I get no significant rubbing. But it took me several months to plan this all out so it actually all worked (plus I was one of the first on here to have this combo of lift/tires, so there wasn't much info to go off of for me). If you rush, you will probably make a poor decision that you will regret down the road, and it'll cost you more money.

Again I agree with everyone else, stick with some 33's. I love them for a DD. Just remember going that big on your DD you will lose lots of gas mileage, power, may need new gears, cut/remove bumpers, hammer pinch weld, get new rims or spacers, and after all that may need some body lift if plan on flexing. Lots of work for a quick decision on a DD.
