Yeah thanks, but no thanks. Thats the last time I'll have the dealership change my oil, plus the 2 hour wait. Time to get out the 2 ton jack and filter wrench (ah- just like my first car in high school). How do you reset the maint. light on the 06 SR5, becasue according to the manual- that light just means "Take your 4Runner in for a $37 oil change."

The instructions to reset the maintenance light have beein posted on the forum. Do a search and you'll easily find it.
Yeah no need for a jack (for me anyways), just slip under and for the drain plug. The V6's filter is very accessible... The V8 is a bit more difficult, but nothing a home mechanic couldn't do...

They came off relatively easy but there wasn't much room to maneuver underneath the vehicle, even with it up on ramps. Oh, and I bought a drain container that was just exatcly the right size...buy one that is slightly larger :bash: I now use a 6-gallon paint bucket. Let me tell you it can get messy when the filter slips through your oily fingers and splashes into 6.5 quarts of oil. Sort of like an elephant doing a cannonball into an above-ground pool...

I've been taking mine to Toyota of Ft. Worth and paying $16.95 for an oil change.
Took my sisters new '07 4Runner to a dealer close to where she works for it's first oil change. (Yes I am a nice brother) I told them to change the oil and $37.00 later I learned the did a semi-synthetic oil charge. So I ask for a basic oil change and I guess they decided to upgrade me without my consent. :bash: They claimed the semi syn is better than the dino. That may be the case but that is not what I wanted done. I bitched they knocked a couple bucks off and appologized...
I will not darken the doorstep of that particular dealership ever again.....

I just purchased my '07 4runner last month and after my 3 free oil changes are over with I'm taking her to a private lube shop. These dealerships (all of them) make their cash by scaring people into having the work done for 200-500% mark-ups. My Toyo dealer wants $50 for conventional oil. Are you kidding me? I can get my local shop to do it for $21 including a tire rotation. They'll charge me $18 if I bring my own oil.
Don't feel as though you need to get any of the work done at your dealership. It won't jeopardize your warranty and you'll save a truck load of money.

My neighbor has a 2006 Corvette and paid $175 to the stealership for an oil change with mobil one.

I don't see why you guys need jacks or ramps. The first time I changed mine I just slid under the car. The drain access on my 06 is much lower than my 93 runner, but still could reach with no problems at all. I have the V8 with the filter down under and had no problems accessing it. You should see the 93's filter position if you have problems with the 4th gen V8. And TomHaney - get a real drain pan guy. Go to Wal-Mart and throw down the $10. You won't have to worry about the filter doing a cannonball into your bucket. It makes things much easier. I let my filter drain by placing it on the pan after I remove it.

$37 is nothing, especially if they actually put in semi-synthetic. It costs more per quart.
Granted, thats an expensive oil, and you can do synthetic changes for less on your own. But for paying someone to do it, at least it wasn't that bad.
I used to pay about $30 to $35 for a dino oil change for my accord when I was still in school. Since then, I bought a floor jack, jack stands, and change it myself. I refuse to pay $70 for a synthetic oil change.
Sure the dealer may have charged extra; but it may be the only oil they use. Just be glad you didn't walk out with a $70 oil change.

Am I the only one that buys their mobil 1 at walmart and then takes it to the dealership to have it changed?! It's $17 for the filter and labor. I do this for my wife's new SI also...

Shit I wish my oil changes were 37 bucks!!! I do my own and it costs more than that for the materials!! Mobil 1 filter and oil will run about 50 bucks. My Ram holds six quarts when I use the oversized Mobil 1 filter (meant for a Ford engine) and it gets really expensive, really fast. Of course I dont buy it at Wal Mart so that could be part of it, I always go to O'Screwme's or Awful Zone, never seem to remember that WalMart now carries Mobil1.
I wont let any of those douchebags at a lube shop or stealership touch my oil. I worked in a few Kwik Kar stations about 6 years ago as a state vehicle inspector, and after seeing what those waterheads did to some vehicles, I am damn sure not taking one of my vehicles to them. I feel safer letting the oil go over 3K miles if I dont have time to change it than to risk my car to them.
