3900 Pound boat/trailer - Is the 3rd Generation up for the job.

I prefer the 3rd generation 4runner and would love to own one. However, I am getting mixed feedback about the power of the engine. I will take the boat in and out of the water a few times each summer. Seasonally, I will be towing the boat between home and the lake (150 miles). The boat trailer has it's own brakes. I realize the 4runner is rated for 5K but looking for real feedback from actual users.

This i can chime in on. so i don't think you have nothing to worry about. i Now own 2 4Runners. (96 limited an a 95 limited) as you know the 96s are 3.5l V6. when i bought my 95, i have to tow it back to my house (brakes were bad) so i rented a U-hall Auto-trans trailer (2200lbs) and used my 96 to tow my 95. The total weight i would say was about 6500+lbs runner and trailer. i only had to go 40miles but i absolutely had no problems, just had too break earlier

This i can chime in on. so i don't think you have nothing to worry about. i Now own 2 4Runners. In lots of states, it is illegal to tow more than the weight of the towing vehicle. In your case, it would be kind of a dead giveaway to nearby law enforcement. Glad you got there safe and unfined.

I tow a 3500lb boat and trailer all the time with no problems at all. Its 275kms to our cottage, so I take it up there and back at least once, and many other places when its not docked there. I would suggest an external tranny cooler for sure! Stay out of overdrive until at cruising speed and on fairly level ground, or if you find it up/down shifting all the time.
