3D Printed Cup-holder Insert

I'd love to have one of these, so I'm logging in for once to actually follow and show my support. Thanks for being willing and able to make this much needed accessory. The stock cup holder have been just plain bad on every 4runner up to the current generation. They hung off the dash, sat in the floor (and weren't tall enough) or were placed in such a way they blocked the rest of the dash! I will definitely want one if you produce them.

I've had a little free time lately, so I went ahead and refined my previous design some more. I started by making the holders wider in diameter, in order to accept a wider range of cups. Instead of a concentric ring at the bottom to hold smaller bottles/cans, I tapered a perimeter down the side of each holder. I think this will look better and be more practical. This new design also uses less material/print time, which will hopefully allow me to sell them for less than I was originally thinking. I'll have a print ready in the next few days.

i like the lock idea at the bottom to hold it. i dont know if anyone would want it or not but if you were able to get the top edge to look good you could also make a delete plate to cover the whole cup holder area or do one cup holder then a switch area or something

Interested ... although my experience with tapered cup holders hasn't been all that satisfying. Generally speaking, it seems you need more than a single, narrow point of contact around the bottom of the cup/can/bottle to effectively stabilize it.

I'll take whatever you put out. This is looking so much more promising than anything toyota has produced,or well. Anything else.

If you value all feedback, here's mine. The lock is genius, and I'd like to see something to that effect in the final design. There's hard points just for this, use em.

The tapered design? Eh. I prefer a well made snug cylinder. I hate to turn back to toyota (after two decades of complaining) but in the 2012 tacos and I would assume the 4runner, the cup holders are exactly what they should be. Large Chick-fil-A sweet tea? No problem. 20oz coke bottle? Sure. Thermos? Whatever dude. They're really the right size for the job.

The switches look cool and for a heavy modder, it's a great idea.

But again. ANYTHING will be better. As soon as I see a PayPal button, I'm in line.

I was thinking about why I dislike the taper, and I think I figured it out. With the taper, your pretty much supporting the entire cup around a thin rim of contact . This causes it to wobble, a lot. That makes it almost as bad as this gaping area we have now. Turn too sharp and it's on a slant until the lip of the cup holder catches it. Even if it weren't a perfect fit for the drink holder you have, a wider cylinder allows the cup to hit the bottom uniformly and the high sides, snug but not quite tight, only allow a minimum of tilt, no wobble.

request!!

if only you could make a insert to fit in the cup holder that would hold the muzzle of my glock 43 and an insert in the flip up "ashtray" thing for my snowwolf 200 vape box lol!!! project is looking good man. wish i had those skills!! :peace:
