The gray portion is actually the insert/adapter that I mentioned in the post. It is essentially a sleeve that'll keep slimmer bottles upright when needed. I bring water bottles along with me all the time, so it is something I would use frequently. I plan on selling the cupholder as a standalone item as well as in a combo pack with 1 or 2 insert/adapters.
Just some food for thought.
Having had custom 3D printed cup holders in my 80 Series, I can say that inserts are a smart design element. Two of the four I had, included two inserts each. The large primary cup holder fit a large Nalgene bottle. The first insert fit a Camelbak water bottle and the second insert fit a 16oz water bottle (although no very well) and most med/lg fountain drink style cups
I don't know the limitations of this space, but if there was a way to make them deep enough to keep smaller items from tipping, but still large enough to handle a slightly larger size, I think that's a win-win. For example, the 16oz water bottles are narrower than a 20oz Pepsi bottle, but if the cup holder is designed well, it will be deep enough to keep the water bottle upright, while still being large enough to fit the Pepsi bottle.
3" is a great depth & a good starting point for width as well ;-)
Here's a few pictures of 1 of my 4 custom cup holders from my Land Cruiser for reference. This one is 3" deep and 3" wide IIRC...
Thanks for the suggestions! The space limitation is really the biggest factor that comes into play when dealing with the cupholders in the 4R. The cupholder area is relatively shallow, as well as being a wide, trapezoid-ish shape. This is probably the least optimal cupholder configuration that could have been used haha.
Because of this, hitting the dimensional "sweet spot" while still fitting within the factory cupholder area is pretty difficult and is why I decided to design an additional insert. Trying to find that right balance between compatibility and functionality has been tedious.
If it ever reaches completion. Serous though, I'd give him twenty bucks, and whatever shipping he needs to just test a prototype. It'll still be better...This will be the best mod to the 4runner ever
What printer are you using and what design software? I teach CADD at a CC here on the VA TN line.
