3L V6 head work

Hi guys.
Looks like I'll be sending my 4runner in to get the head gasket done in the next coming weeks.
Obviously it will be getting a new gasket....... New head bolts, getting the head tested and probably skimmed.
What other new parts will I need to have while I'm getting it done.
I know people have the stat done at the same time but to be honest I'm looking to spend as little as possible and that's an easy enough job to do myself at a later point.
I'm looking for necessities here guys.

With budget in mind at a minimum I would do the knock sensor pigtail and coolant tube.

Both are under the intake manifold.



Depending on the mileage and service history the timing belt and water pump.

Also any hard/cracked hoses that are hard to get to once it's all put back

together.

Pigtail and coolant tube ? ?
Its got 270k km on the clock and the water pump was supposedly done by the previous owner quite recently.
Will I also need a set of intake and exhaust gaskets?

Yes you want to replace those gaskets too.

You can purchase a "set" of gaskets that will provide the seals you need for

either a valve grind, or head gasket, or complete rebuild.

Whomever is doing the job for you should be able to order the right set for

your 4runner. The set may even include valve stem seals.

There are also sets available for the injectors and the aluminum metric

washers for the fuel rails, cold start injector, and fuel line.

Just wanna make sure to stress the importance of getting the heads magnafluxed! Had a friend do the job 3 times (at the dealership, no less!) and it blew all 3 times! The 4th job we did ourselves and had the heads magnafluxed for cracks, found a bunch of tiny cracks in the driver's side head. Replaced it and its still going after several years of driving!

Not sure why the dealership didn't do this for him, but I saw with my own eyes the invoice for two of the jobs from a Toyota dealership.

I'd recommend having the lifters clearances checked & adjusted. They tend to get out of spec, & geiinin tgem shimed correctly is not a super easy thing to do your self.

The pigtail is known to go bad, and is easier to replace to while the heads and intake are off. Ditto for the coolant tube. Refresh both those parts now and save yourself some swearing down the road.
