3rd 4Runner - 1st 2nd Gen

Greetings all.

My name is Tim, and I just brought home a 1991 SR5 V6 5 speed 4x4. This is my third 4Runner (2004 V8 Limited, 1996 SR5) and is my return to Toyota after tying Jeep out for a winter (1997 Cherokee XJ Two Door 4.0 4x4 5 speed). Also my first manual Toyota 4x4.

The truck has 208k and I purchased it from the original owner who was simply downsizing his fleet. Came with a fat stack of paperwork and both keys. I trailered it home to Akron, Ohio from Monkton, Maryland.

I'm super excited to tear into it, and I've already found a 5vzfe and wiring harness to swap in instead of the 3.0... looking forward to getting to know you all on this side of T4R!

looking good man. curious why you are removing the 3.0 liter? I have the 1992 trd 5 and i think it has the same engine.

That's a good looking truck. I don't see any rust around the wheels/fenders, which is great.

The 3vze gets the job done and a good one will run forever, but certainly the 3.4 is a better engine with more power, if you don't mind the work/expense of doing the swap. I considered the swap back a few years ago, but just never got up the energy to pursue it. If I was 10 years younger I might still think about doing it, but it's not gonna happen at this point anymore.

The 3.0 works just fine... its just slower than all hell and a real bummer about the truck.

Ohhh there is rust. Its rear fenders only which is totally fixable. The frame is in good shape which is rare for the rusty shit boxes in N.E. Ohio.


The swap is for sure at the top of my mechanical abilities, but I am looking forward to it. That and the 5vz and wiring harness off a part out is only gonna run me $500 total. I think I'm going to keep this truck a while, so the engine swap would be a worthwhile project. Time will tell, I'm excited to dominate some snow banks though....
