We all know how embarrassing the horns sound on the 4Runners, so I wanted to know if the horn on a 1999 Tacoma will be a direct plug in since I think it sounds a lot better

just go down to the auto parts store and buy a set of f350 horns for a full size ford truck. problem solved and it will have more ummmph than the taco horn

I bought 4th gen horns from a part out truck. They plug right into the factory horn connectors.

My comment is totally off topic per say, but as a former truck driver, I have to say that I've had many a good laugh at my fellow truckers expense when they would make the mistake of driving over a set of train tracks while I was nearby.
I would wait untill they were committed to crossing and then I would lay on my air horn...instant pucker-factor of about 7 or 8!
It's in that split second after hearing a loud horn—that the brain doesn't distinguish the difference between a truck horn and a train horn. Hahaha...
This was usually followed seconds later by either anger for being tricked, or giddiness for not getting squashed by a train.
Maybe I should get an air horn for my runner too. :horn:
This was my route as well, It was a pretty simple job all in all cheep too and the truck sounds like, well, a truck now not a vespa. I believe the horns are Fiamm or something Italian like that.

I used to have Hella Supertones and I loved them at first but after awhile I thought they sounded out of place so I sold those to a friend with an accord and picked up a set of FIAMM El Grande horns. They are great sounding horns IMO. They are loud, sound truck like and sound OEM'ish as well.

Yes! Horrible. Roadrunner sound. I swamped mine out for some air horns and it's 10 time better.

Toyota's been using the same horn connectors since...forever LOL. My '00 Tundra had weak horns,used ones off an LX470/Landcruiser,direct plug n play. Did the same with a 94 Supra.
Another option are cheap (usually on sale for $9.99) chrome harbor freight horns. They sound like domestic vehicle horns but aren't a direct fit. Don't like the blingy chrome? HF also has cheap spray paint to fix that. I installed them on my dad's CRV,powered by a relay triggered by the factory wiring. It's been close to 4 years since I installed them and no issues.
