3rd Gen 4Runner Lift Information and FAQ's

I must have gotten lucky when I did this before then. I know for sure I didn't disassemble the spring and shock to rotate the cup.

I've adjusted the alignment of the lower bushing a little bit, but there's so much tension on the assembly that I would hesitate to turn it 180* without releasing said tension of the spring.

I don't think I had to move the spring in the assembly, I think I just unbolted the strut assembly and rotated the whole thing in the shock perch to get it to not hit the spindle. Been a while like I said though, but I remember those threaded spring compressors being a major PITA and I'd likely not have used them to move it.

I jacked the truck up and looked at clearance. I'm "assuming" when I move the spring up a perch on the 5100s it'll move the coils up as well. If so I may actually be in better shape than I am now clearance wise.

I'm not gonna fiddle with those threaded spring compressors this go around. Gonna take the strut assembly to a local shop and have them move the perches for me. I'm gonna have them put the coils back in the same locations they're at now and cross my fingers.

I got 'lucky' with mine and one of the 3 upper positions worked. Then I just spun the bottom bushing with a 3/8" extension jammed in the hole to line it up with the lower arm ears. This has been the case with at least 3 suspension changes at this point. Make sure the upper mount rubber doesn't turn with the spring when you move the lower shock eye.

August of 17 last time I messed with 5100's shop wanted $125 to do the perch move, Fug that.
I had spring compressors don't like them for such a stout spring. Don't work at all on 6112's.
So I figured out the way to do it on the vehicle with a floor jack that also works on the 6112's.
My labor is cheap just takes a bit more time the first time. pull steering knuckle out of BJ's tie it up, disconnect swaybar.
Jack under LCA slight upward tension on strut remove strut nut lower jack, spring tension is zero before strut stem is out of tophat.
2 times adjusting 5100's, 4 times adjusting 6112's, at no time was it dangerous or close to it.

Holy cow, I'm expecting to pay $40-$50 tops. In a pro wall mounted spring compressor should be a 10 minute job!

Speedy, where I live that 2009 price same compressor, job charge under an hour don't happen now days. It worth $50.

And now I'm considering Ironman Foam Cell Pros after rewatching Tinkerer's Adventure video on them (I was a total noob first time I came across that video Truth About Ironman Foam Cell Pro | In-depth Technical Review & Comparison - YouTube). It would be even more than the 6112 (although probably not much more if I can catch them on sale). I really don't like the idea of having to mess with perches and doubly so after seeing y'all talk about prices for a shop to do it. Also his video lays out that they excel in my exact use case. Seems like about the cheapest option for a serviceable shock (and you don't have to mess with nitrogen) that's adjustable by myself on the truck. Buy once, cry once right? Man if only front suspension was as simple (and as cheap) as the rear.

96RedRunner LOL
Rushthezeppelin as you've seen you'll get a dozen opinions from a dozen different folks. I like the idea of the adjustability of a coil over system but on the 4Runner I expect they become pretty well locked in over time as the threads gal unless you really keep them greased. That's why I went with the 5100s or similar.

The threaded death sticks aren't that bad really. I'd certainly use them before paying a shop $125. I'll let you know how I make out.

I used my threaded death sticks last year on my Tundra TRD Coils/5100 setup and nothing bad happened. I grease them before use. I also use a mallet to move the clamps around after getting them onto the coils and into position since you can't just slip them into the place you need them to be on these things. I'd love to have a wall mount spring compressor. But, such is life.

Checked out the link, My thoughts.
Do you think that foam cell will give you 100k mi of service. Bang for the Buck.
Never pay more for a unproven first gen product of any kind.
Most times perches are a set it and forget proposition.
96Red 5100's 2 times over 160k mi, wanted more lift to match rear 8 wraps.
01 6112's around 20k mi settled started scrubbing fenderwell under certain conditions while turning.
So I tinkered with ride height and preload of perch position for the ride I was looking for.
Top hat spacer no top hat spacer at different perch positions for the lift I wanted.
Ended up perch 3 DS, perch 2 PS with 3/8" top hat both sides. I'm good for many many miles.

Well after my research only making me look at increasingly more and more options (and some confusion) I decided to give Slee Offroad in Golden, CO a shout and I finally ended up with something I think should make me happy. They suggested with my use case of semi-DD and once a month offroading I probably just want to keep things simple but go with a quality reliable product and so now I've got a set of OME Nitrocharger 90004 with OME 2881s getting put together for me. Sound like they should last many years, work well both off and on road and I won't have to worry about perches or other adjustments. Just plug em in and forget about em kinda deal. Cost 830 after assembly but I feel pretty confident that it should work out well. Hopefully they are ready to pickup today and I can pop them in tonight.

I put on my 01 the OME 3" lift kit 881-90004 F 890-60073 R $970.00 Toytec sales recomended as my use was same.
No prior experience with OME, your and my idea of a good ride probably different, I sold the kit $450.00, less than 10k mi on it.

Popcorn means the show ain't over, "I feel pretty confident that it should work out well" is the clue.

I don't let friends drive drunk, I don't let friends buy OME. MHO having first hand experience.

Well it's all installed and I like it so far. Not been on a proper trail yet but I tooled around in the park across the street from my home that has a few hundred yards of slightly rutted dirt and some parking bumps to drive over, felt just fine. It's certainly WORLDS better than the spacer lift with cheap shocks and struts that was on my truck before (those were just plain harsh). It's definitely firm but I'm not going to complain, I don't rally my 3rd gen.

I should have put a humor emoji on end of post.
OME is known by a few for being firm I'll call it harsh, I gave it some miles to see if it
softened up it didn't so I moved on. I putt around offroad was looking for a pliable setup.
You like it that's all that matters, luck to you have fun wearing it out.
