3rd Gen 4Runner Lift Information and FAQ's

We should also get some info on recommended shocks for various lifts. I'm still trying to figure out what to use with my tall 9 wraps coils when I do put them in. or even with the 8 wraps. I'm thinking just OEM land cruiser shocks should do the job, but i've seen OME, Monroe, and Bilsteins (5100, 5125, 5150) so I am really not sure what to go with. As for the front with TRD tundra, I think i'm going to use the bilstein adjustable 5100. I have the tacoma 5100 so that might not be the best, maybe and when i have enough money to spend i'll try and upgrade to the tundra application of the adjustable 5100 to see if that creates a better ride.
 
Does anyone know if the 2005-2010 Tacoma (prerunner or 4wd) front coils will work on the front of a 3rd gen?

What are these aftermarket upper control arms you speak of? I've got an OME lift on mine, and since installing it I've had problems getting the correct camber on the passenger side wheel. The cam bolt is turned as far as it will go, and its still about 1deg out, based on firestones readings. I did a search for some aftermarket control arms, but couldn't find anything.
 
So I have some last minute questions about the Toytec lift I'm preparing to order at the end of the week.

For the front lift:

I know I want the Coilovers with Bilstein 5100 shocks for the front but are these Coilovers...

ToyTec coilover kit with Bilstein 5100 shocks

...the same as these Coilovers?

-My assumption is that the former is simply the disassembled version of the later, and with the unassembled version I would use my own stock top plates. Correct?
-Also, with the unassembled version it seems the coils only come in silver... which leads me to believe they are the 4cyl light 500lb coils shown as one of the options for the assembled Coilover. I have the 6cyl so I assume I'll need the med 600lb coils (which come standard in red), correct? Anyone know which lb coil comes with the unassembled Coilover?

-My thinking here is if I can "custom" order the ToyTec Ultimate Kit by ordering everything separate & assembling the coilovers myself then I could use the saved money to upgrade from the ProComps to either the OMEs or Bilsteins. But what is the advantage of each of the upgrades?

yes and no. the assembled shock uses a Bilstein 6930 and the unassembled uses a D558. the D558 is was originally made for a tacoma so it is valved a little softer and the 6930 was originally a tundra shock so it is slightly firmer. the 6930 also uses our custom flex mount top plate. 600lb coils are the standard coils that come on the unassembled kit.

basically the Procomp is the budget shock. the OME is a good all around shock and a step up from the Procomp. the Bilstein is a longer soft valved shock. it is longer than the OME or Procomp and requires at least a 3 inch lift

You're a lifesaver man. I'll be going with the unassembled kit to save a little cash since I can assemble & install it myself. I only have one more question... I plan on running LC coils (either 8 wraps or 7 wraps) in the rear with Bilsteins shocks. And my question is I've done some reading and from that I've gathered that the shocks sold by you guys at ToyTec are actually tacoma shocks(Rear Bilstein Shocks for 96-02 4RUN) while the ones that come with the SS kit (System 1.2 - Rear only lift - $695.00 : Sonoran Steel) are specifically made for the 4runner. There is nothing on either website that claims these things, I have just read them in various threads. So any clarification here?

i'm not sure what shock SS uses but the ones that ToyTec sells are the 6252 shock. Bilstein doesn't really make the shocks specifically for a certain vehicle with the 5125. they just have a list of different shocks that are different length/travel and valving. here is the part list. Bilstein

we made a eye to stud adapter for the shock so it would work on the 4runner and it also gives it another flex joint at the top of the shock. I have those 5125's on my 4runner with the 8.5 wrap LC and i love them. they ride great and have a ton of flex

My Lift

I installed a 2.5 inch lift kit from fat Bob's Garage before my Uwharrie trip.

Thanks for this information! I just got my first 4runner(99', manual, v6, SR5) at the end of last year and I'm ready to put some money into it.

I'm considering a lift, 75% for looks and 25% for offroading. I work in highway construction and drive through highway construction projects regularly. I've had mine nearly hung up a few times and it always worries me. Still, I need a good daily driver as I travel 25 miles to and from work plus trips to sites.

Question about the spacers if anyone can help. As far as reducing the life of the spring, can anyone estimate how much life is lost? Also, mine is a 99 model with original springs. Currently there is no sag, but wouldn't the effect of the spacer be worse on old springs like mine?

I've researched the OME 2-2.5"set up. What I have read has me very interested. I'd like to retain ride quality as much as possible. Any idea what a reasonable price to install would be? I'm not set up to try and do it at home. Plus, I'd probably screw something up.

With the OME 2-2.5", what would be a good tire size selection to match. I'm leaning towards BFG AT or a Goodyear Duratrac.
 
Spacers suck. I had some on mine a for less than 2 years and they finished off my already tired coils. The ride sucks and only gets worse, but if you're limited on $$ and want it right now, it's a cheap lift. If you don't want to pay to do it all over again in a year or 2 and save money in the long run, get the OME Complete Package or the Toytec Ultimate lift and do it right the first time. Talk to Dylan (steezemcqueen) at toyteclifts.com and he can get you set up.

It takes about 4-8 hours to install a lift the 1st time yourself, I would expect a shop to charge you $3-400. My advice... do it yourself at a buddy's house. All you need is basic tools and you will gain some valuable knowledge about how your truck works too.

You can run 285/75/16s (33x11s), 255/85/16s (33.5x9.5), or 265/75/16s (32x10) with the OME 3" lift. If you get 881s w/o any spacers and 906s (OME 2" lift), then the 265/75s would be the better choice IMO. The 285s and 255s look better with the bigger lift, but the 265s are a little cheaper so that's your call.

3rd 4runner lift

Does the rear sway bar limit the rear extension travel when using the landcruiser coils? It seams like the ride is unusually stiff, maybe its just the coils.

A way to save money on the rear brake line is to just buy another stock one and connect the two together. Its like $10 compared to $40 for the steel braided one.

Hello, I wanted to give you some feedback on the system 1.2 I purchased formy 2000 Toyota 4Runner. Wow! As you know I live in Moab UT so I am surrounded by some of the bestoff road trails in the world. The Sonoran Steel system 1.2 that I installedhas allowed me to conqure some of the trails in the area that werepreviously out of the question. I used the Fins and Things trail in theSand Flats Rec area as a shake down run and was immediatly impressed. Afteronly a minor adjustment to the skid plate on the gas tank, (it was rubbingon the drive shaft) I was able to go with confidence to Steel Bender, andHells Revenge and conqure those trails as well. The biggest benifit to me has been that I don't drag the class 3 hitch anymore when attacking steep grades up and down. I always thought that I wouldneed to buy a custom rear bumper to increase my departure angles but withyour 1.2 kit that is no longer at the top of my list(a rear diff lock is). My 4Runner is also my daily driver and when I'm out around town this riggets noticed. I get asked ALL the time where I got my lift what size tiresam I running, (285-75R16 BFG AT), how does it perform and so one. I alwayssay the same thing. If your driving a Toyota, especially a 4Runner, checkout Sonoran Steel if your serious about taking your rig off-road. I have a couple questions for you. When my rear suspension articulatesbeyond the normal travel range of day to day driving I get a loud creakingsound coming from the rear end. I'm not too sure where it's coming from butmy guess is the rubber bushings in the rear sway bar or the pan-hard bar. Have you heard of this problem before and if so what can I do to make it goaway? I was also wondering if you know of any clearance issues with the gastank/skid plate or other items when installing a toyota factory e-lockerrear axel into a 4Runner that was not equiped with one from factory? Anyfeedback you have regarding either of these two issues would be greatlyappreciated.
 
the sonoran steel kit is nice but kinda pricy

more than likely, your driveshaft is still rubbing on the gas tank skid. the extended bumpstops that sonoran steel includes should prevent it
