3rd gen 4runner rear speaker size options

stock size is 5.25", but any aftermarket will require some mods.
on my last 4runner i made and HDF plate/risers and used my 6.5" speakers from my tacoma. it was a pain in the ass.
what have ya'll done to fit a larger speaker in the back doors of a 3rd gen 4runner? should i just stick with 5.25"s?
i'm thinking MDF or plexi plate/riser with some metal trimming. this is what the innards look like.

I never run speakers in teh rear, in my 3 years of competing in car audio I never met anyone that ran rear speakers. If your front is good enough you never need any rear. Plus there can be staginf issues etc when running rear and front. You could throw a MDF spacer in there to make some 6.5"s fit but IMO it isn't worth the trouble.

Tye, you never mentioned you used to compete in stereo competitions (or else I just wasn't paying attention--d'oh!). I may have to pick your brain on my next install. As for the rear speakers, you never know how people listen to their music--my brother just doesn't get the whole soundstage idea, and thinks the music should sound equal from all around. On all of mine, I always put in rear speakers, but only for fill--the fader was usually set around 70-80% front.

I completely disagree; if you turn off the rear speakers, IMO, it sounds like poo.
I'll be running Infinity's off 75X4 RMS, and my JL sub has the low's covered.

Hello,

I have Infinity Kappa 6x9's in the rear but if I were to do it again I would go with 5x7s.

I had to do some minor cutting but it was no big deal, the only issue is the rear window doesn't go down the final 2 inches. Since I don't have kids this isn't a problem, it works fine but stops at the 2 inch mark.

It is the magnet that hits but I bet 5x7s would clear just fine.

While you have it apart add the Dynamat 4 door kit $99 on ebay. You will see such a huge improvement by adding it to the doors alone.
