3rd Gen 4WD Modes

Thank you so much for all the helpful information. This is exactly why I came to this site for help. I just got a few pictures of the undercarriage and engine compartment. Should I be concerned with the rust shown in these pictures, or does it look like normal wear/corrosion on a 11 year old truck? By the way, is the only difference between the 1999 and 2000 Limited (both having multi-mode 4WD, AWD, and a rear diff lock) the 1 inch coil lift?

What I did was spent $50 on a pre-purchase inspection with a reputable mechanic. Get his findings in writing and take any issues back to the dealership as leverage. Use the the more complex issues to your advantage. Mine had a dirty MAF and 4x4 actuating switch was out. Generalizing about the potential cost of repair I got him down from 7k to 3,500. Make sure your salesman knows that you know he paid a couple thousand less for the T4R than he is selling it to you for. Dont feel bad and dont look back.

Basically. But then again, not all '99s have the tall coils, and I think some early '00s got em. I would consider them the same now anyways since coils that are 10+ years old are bound to be saggy and shot. A suspension upgrade will really improve a 10+ yr old 4runner so then how high it sits is up to you.

What do you guys think about the rust in the pictures above?

That doesn't look too bad to me, but we've only heard of rust in CA so what do I know.:) It looks like the steering rack might be leaking though, it's hard to tell in the pics but it looks wet.

about the 2000 year models, my 2000 has the push button awd, center diff lock and rear locker, just like the 99s. So don't limit your search to just 99s massey. The rust in those pics doesn't look that bad though, I'd have a mechanic do a once over on it and snag it if he approves. It may be a LONG time before you see another 99-00 for sale with all those features!

So do you have two buttons to the left if the steering column? One for center diff lock and one for rear diff lock?

do all 4runners have limited slip in the rear?

i was pulling out of a dirt/gravel parking lot and stepped on it to get into traffic and noticed both sides kicked up some dust- as a 2000 4x4 auto with the stick shift 4x4 there is no locker feature - figured it must be l.s.d tho' ???

None do unless it was put in aftermarket. An open diff will power both wheels also until one free wheels then it's all over...

yep but the multi mode has both of those systems in there, awd as you described is the push button on the side of the stick and if you move the stick it locks the front to the rear for a 50/50 split but is still only sending power to one side (left to right) and that's where the lockers come in locking the axle with the locker from left to right, so from the box the '99 can be locked 50/50 front to back and locked on the rear axle left to right for 3 wheels spinning in tandem and only the front wheel shifting to the side that's slipping, this is very good if you ever have a wheel lift off the ground in any circumstance.

awd sends power to the wheel that is slipping front or rear
4x4 locks front and back together but still only send power to one wheel on each axle that is slipping

4x4 with lockers is locking the front and back together with the t-case or center diff lock then locking side to side/left to right together with the lockers located in the axle diff/gear housings

the answer can be sooo much more complicated then that but that's really the basics of it without getting into the mechanics of how each make/model achieves these functions.

Exactly, this is the same system the 80 series landcruiser uses, AWD with a center diff lock. I put an Aussie in the rear of mine and loved it. I'd take an Aussie over an ARB any day....for the price and they don't break. they usually release before they break.

"Usually" being the key word. An ARB might leak air from the tube, but that's a 10 minute fix. The compressors themselves are some of the most reliable and best (if not the very best) small air comps on the market. As far as actually breaking, the carrier for the ARB is much stronger than the stock carrier (which is still used with the Aussie).

I think Aussies are cool, but they do not work so great in some situations. The reason I went with ARB (besides the strength) is because a locked rear on a packed snowy road just sucks. The ability to choose to run open so your ass end doesn't slide out so much is very nice and well worth the extra money if you live in a snowy area.
