I currently have two tool boxes, a tool bag and assorted other containers in my truck. I need to pair it down to make room for camping gear and other stuff for summer activities. So I was thinking. What are some specific tools I should carry. Example: a few sockets vs a set of sockets. Thanks in advance for the help.

I do the same, but always keep a spare Supercharger Belt in the back. Once I get my lift in, I'll probably buy a CV to throw in the back as well.

I keep a RubberMaid Storage box with jumpers, old Mercedes ChannelLock type pliers, Vise-Grips, old BMW multi-screwdriver, 8,10,12,14 combo wrenches, old VOM, electrical tape, needle-nose pliers, duct tape, rope, recovery strap, 3/8ths metric socket set, cheapo code reader, fuses, blanket, tarp, receiver tongue and ball, Frisbee®, towel and a bathing suit.

I have a craftsman bag that i have all the basic tools. small+large sockets, screw drivers, wrenches, wire cutter..ect and I always carry jumper cables and a volt meter. All this takes up very little space but will allow me to fix most minor things. AAA is there to take care of the big problems.

This is a great question, I build and mounted tool boxes in the Samurai I had before the 4runner. I kept all my recovery gear in one box, a jacket, sock cap, gloves, all fluids I might need, rags, and plastic bags.
In the other box I kept parts that were prone to breaking...though I never had any break on the trail...as well as my tools for repairs, wrenches, jack, wheel chocks, miscellaneous wires.
I hope the 4runner will be less in need of that kind of gear but I think I'll build some boxes for tools and recovery gear just in case....gotta decide where to put it and how to make it the most functional.

My 'tool kit' is not so basic cus I drive a not so basic 4runner lol. At all times I keep 1 cv axle, front axle nut socket, 150+ socket set, wrenches, hand held tools (drivers, pliers, etc..), cordless impact wrench, pry bars, tow straps, d shackles, gear oil, brake oil, motor oil, standard grease, electric wire, assortment of rubber hoses, assortment of nuts and bolts, zip ties, medical kit, jumpers, and I'm sure other stuff I'm missing...
IF I had to lighten the load for every day travel I would probably just keep a 40+ socket set, a few of my more common used wrenches, general hand held tools, and medical kit.
Only reason I carry all that stuff all the time is cus it's just easier for me to not take crap in and out constantly. Never know when I'll need it or come across someone that will.

[MENTION=58830]ARKRWLR[/MENTION] you've got the best set up. What I have in a small bag in the back is. 21, 19, 17, 14, 12: 10 mm sockets and wrenches. Some pliers, screw drivers, bailing wire, hammer and a few random things. But most important is WATER and a clevis shackle with a tow strap!!!! Also duct tape and starter fluid go a long way!!!
So over the weekend. I went o AOAA. I had a flat tire due to the valve stem breaking. Someone gave me this. ! Colby valve stem. It's BADASS. It fixes your valve stem from the outside. I never saw this before. You remove your broken valve stem. And screw this on. It's not cheap. About $40 for 2 stems. But seriously. A must HAVE!

vice grips, channel locks, needle nose, 8-14 combo wrenches, 1/4 and 3/8 drive socket set, electric tape, gorilla tape, a few feet of 12 gauge wire, a few feet of mechanics wire, a few hose clamps, zip ties, big ones, fuses, tow strap, gallon of water, qt oil, qt tranny fluid, jumper cables, gloves, bright safety vest, another flash light, flares, lighter, alt belt, ps belts ( old ones Ive pulled off but good for an emergency, bottle of JB extra aged.
some of this is in a big tote, some is stored under the rear seat, some stored in the back storage compartment.
under my hood is a engine compartment/trouble light with a wind up 25 foot cord
winter time add sleeping bag, food, rain coat, folding shovel

Yes. I use this setup more than any tool I've ever carried. Some of those little streams & rivers are awesome fishing spots.
But to add to the thread, if you want bare minimum tools some pliers, flat head & philips screw driver, adjustable wrench, socket wrench with 10, 12, 14 and 17mm sockets and a breaker bar will pretty much do any job in a pinch.

I always have tools coz it's part of my job, but metric wrenches and sockets got added to the mix

That list is almost exactly what I carry. Spare CV and a 35mm socket if off road. And you can't forget duct tape and bailing wire. Those two things are used by me more than anything else.

If you were going to start purchasing tools specifically for a 3rd gen runner what would the core set include that will allow you to perform the majority of the maintenance like valve cover gaskets, timing belt (kit), tune up (plugs, wires, pcv valve etc..), rear diff gasket, rear axle seals fluid changes to name a few.
I'm looking for very specific details like wrench types, sizes etc..
