Not everyone will desire a complete cage. They are often for 100% off road vehicles only.

that roll bar is not very usefull except for holding a spare tire/highlift. I have one in my truck. Mine was out of a jeep, and i cut it and made it fit. plus $250 for that is a wayy steep price tag. a cage is completely different, and i think the title of the thread being "bolt in cage" is obvious enough. Maybe not many people desire a full cage but it is exactly what i am looking for.

I have one question for OL. I know you are using a 4runner for mock up. Does it by chance have a sunroof? If it does sweet, if not i guess I will have to make it fit. When i was looking at the interior for cage ideas i was kind of pissed that i have this huge sunroof bulge to work around. It was doable, but there really was no room for bars going over head.

ODL shop truck has the Sunroof.

Brianemc2- I have the 1st roll bar mod in mine and will post picture when I get home. It protects the cargo area and a little bit of the back seat. Fortunately my kids are still small and would work for them now. Those of us that would be real interested in this are looking for protection for everyone. Don't get me wrong I am happy to have my roll bar but it is not a Roll Cage.

i wouldnt say they are for 100% off road vehicles, id put one in just for safety and piece of mind in my DD and family rig. knowing that if i had a tire blow-out or LBJ failure at 60-70mph on the freeway(if i was loaded with camping gear or empty, on my way home from church) i and my family would stand a far better chance of walking away from the crash with only minor cuts scraps and bruises would be worth the cage imo. it would serve a secondary use as a off road/ wheeling cage to me, but the fact that most off road roll overs happen at slow speeds and are generally just "flops" you wouldnt crush the cabin that much. sure you might blow out some windows, crack the whindsheild, and dent/damage some body panels but you would be able to right it and drive it away in most cases. now sure there are some places where the cage would be nice, like if you where to roll down into a canyon and or off a small ledge but lets face it, if drive off of black bear pass or slid off something like that, it dosent matter if you have an exo cage or internal cage or even both, you will not live, now will your truck. hell i wouldnt even want to go off something like that in a NASCAR.

He is using the shop truck the nice Autumn Blaze '99. I would not have a problem with him using mine though and we both have sun roofs so it would still be the same.

Yeah i was thinking he had a oddly copper colored 4runner I forgot that yours had a sunroof too. Our trucks must have been pretty similar stock. Sweet Im glad he is working around the sunroof. And you are tall so if you fit I should too. Thanks =)

ODL- yes there are slight differences in the headline of the Sun-roof, non sun roof version and also the 99 newer and the pre 99.

Non-Sunroof is a flat front to rear with no droop to accomodate the sunroof and workings. So if you make for sun roof version then it will work for one without. Will have a slightly larger gap up front for any cross bars going through that area.

Pre-99 have a smaller Maplight/ rear view mirror console then the 99+. Only real differences I can think of at the moment.

Time to break out the 1 3/4" tubing bender and mig welder to fab up a usable interior roll bar kit for my son's 98 4runner. Tubing is cheap, should be fun.

Post your build would love to see what you come up with. We can share ideas .. I will say Tube isn't all that cheap.. I buy it by the truck loads... Now if you get your son involved and have him help It is worth every penny.. My Father wasn't into fabrication or cars.. He was into Hunting and shooting...

The pictures posted seem to be of either a FULL interior cage or the cargo area only. Can you make a design that is two piece, perhaps a Low Profile front piece to protect just the driver in a roll-over? Then the rear bar can be separate or the 1st Gen cage.

YES. The sunroof models have a bulge where the sunroof retracts into the cab. It leaves you with about 2" less headroom that one without. Brian2sun has one without the sunroof and i love the headroom without the bulge. If you make one compatible with the sunroof it will also fit a non sunroof version, Since you cannot really have to many overhead tubes or else you will knock your head all the time

Jimmy... Build it tight and right and I'm certain there will be a market for it. I've kicked around the idea of a B-pillar to 1st gen (or similar) to save room up front for my big 6'6" a$$. I figure this could save my passengers while keeping the front closest to me from completely caving in. But since I haven't wheeled in a year, it's still just an idea. Good luck with this. What is wrong with that? Just because I want a cage doesn't mean I wanna ditch my ****, I swapped in the panels and found the cover and brackets, dammit, I'm going to use them. You can ditch your parts all you want.

It's awfully nice when you've got a $1,500 supercharger you just picked up hiding back there during transport. I keep expensive gear like jacks, a tool box, an air compressor, and 2 subs back there. You may not give two ****s, but there is no reason to get rid of the cargo cover. A tube design allowing me to keep it will be ahead of any other. People will know you have expensive stuff back there just By seeing how modded the truck is, last thing I need them to do is view the gallery of tools and expensive stealables back there that tint just can't hide

I think BigJohn was just saying that most people who would go as far as installing a cage inside their trucks, aren't concerned with "luxury" items like a cargo cover. But I hear what you're saying too, it is nice to have a cover back there to hide things. I don't have a cargo cover anyways so it wouldn't matter to me personally. If integrating the cargo cover wouldn't make the cage harder to design or make it more expensive, then why not. But if I had to pay more money for something like that, I wouldn't. I'd just make my own custom cover if anything.

The first pics I posted were of a full cage. That is what ODL is looking at producing. Being that he is talking about bolt in I am sure there is some kind of modularity simply by necessity of being bolt in. The second set of two pictures is of my 1st gen roll bar mod with my CO2 Tank and fire extinguisher attached. Also it is better to go with one combined system then to try and mix and match. especially when talking about a safety item like a roll cage.

Good stuff keep it coming.... We will try to make it tight and not in the way... When you take the jump to a cage there is going to be a bit of compromise.. Safety and design will be first, all while keeping comfort in mind. I am a big guy so I need room.. I already feel a little snug in the Runner so no need to make it worse..
