3rd Gen Bolt in Cage

I'd be interested, but not for a few years. My 4runner is too nice and a DD so an exo or internal is not in the works. I would love to retire mine to a trail rig, but I don't have the funds. Exo's are better for keeping the external looks better, but not the greatest for a DD. I am always torn with building up my 3rd gen because it is a nice suv and I would rather get a trail 1st gen and wheel the piss out of it and not have to worry about driving it to work the next day. Basically internal is much more appealing and depending on how it looks and saves space, I may be interested in the future.

I am assuming that this cage would enclose the passenger area not just the rear storage area. If the cage could be built so that it doesn't affect leg room, I am over 6ft so i need all it has, and was fairly discrete i would be very interested. Obviously price would be a factor, but since my rig is my DD the biggest thing would be the impact on the comfort of the drivers and front passengers area.

I would be up for an internal roll cage as I still use mine as a DD. I don't want an Exo cage driving down the freeway. I am not looking for something that I can roll down a mountain multiple times, I'm looking for something that will save my life in that very rare instance I flop.

If it was tight to the body and didn't take up all cargo/passenger room. It would be nice to strap some stuff to the cage - CO2/tire/ fire extinguisher/etc.

I've been thinking about adapting an internal cage for a standard cab Taco (Allpro and 4xInnovations make them) for a long time now and am planning to do that in the near future. But if you made one that was designed for a 3rd gen, I'd be all over it. Plus I think your shop turns out some rad stuff and I'd rather support a local shop who is also on the forum. I know the Taco cages are ~$500, do you think it would be somewhere around that mark? I would be willing to pay a couple hundred more if it covered both the front and rear seats.

Interested. I've been able to find only a single bar for the cargo bay for the 3rd Gens. Save our heads first. Let the cargo bay fend for itself!

rite now its a pain in the @ss, moving the 1st gen bar in and out between trips and daily driving.

Exo Cages- lets think about the logic of this...an exo cage is to protect the body of the truck...you know?...so it looks good...but an exo cage...looks like sh!t...so what are you really doing? Making the truck look like sh!t now so it doesn't look like sh!t after you roll it? Stupid.

Interior cage is where it's at. Clean.

I'd entertain the idea of buying a cage if it was done right. Maximum interior space, maybe make the cargo tubes a modular design so we can buy and attach different accessories, and FRAME CONNECTED. A cage bolted to the sheet metal floor isn't gonna do much in the event you actually NEED it...

Wow! Alot of people here worried about Asthetics! I thought I was the only guy here with OCD! HA HA HA!

All kidding aside, I would have to go with an exo-cage. I don't wheel my rig hard, but if I did have one to beat up, (like many of you do already), I'd buy an exo. Hell, looks aside, it could mean the difference between driving it home after a roll-over, or having it towed to the wrecking yard, and having it written off, because it's un-repairable.

I don't think the exo is meant to look pretty, just give you some added insurance that you'll get your rig back home in one piece, and be able to drive it again. (Kinda hard to do that, with the roof caved in....)

One look at Rockdawg's old rig, made this decision for me. Now if I could just find another 4Runner that is in rough shape for me to thrash through the trails!

This is great feed back.... Keep it coming.. The idea will be tight and clean.. That is why it needs to be bolt in.. Otherwise a weld in kit ( cheaper) would be tough to put in and retain stuff like : headliner, interior,

It will be a FULL cage front to rear.. The ability to tie into the frame will also be present. However, that addition may need to be welded...

If your really going through with this have an option for the seat harness tubing behind the front seats that way people can add in seats compatible for a 3 or 4 point harness.

but then you lose the ability to recline the seat all the way back... i know on long road trips i like to do that when at a rest stop and sleep...

i like the idea of a internal cage best it keeps the rig looking clean and is unnoticed with out looking for it(from outside). exo cages are great if you have a dedicated wheeler, but the like what LINY4Runner said they can make your nice rig look like :toilet:, i rather the functionality of a rig that looks like a DD and will protect you in the off chance that you do roll it and it would save your life, at that point F the truck as long as you and your loved ones walk away. besides ive seen several times where exo cages get hung up and stop guys where trucks without them make it through just fine. i dont ever pan on wheeling my truck so hard as to be willingly flopping it on its side to make it over or around obstacles. thats not how i wheel and i think for most of us who like the looks of their runner and have put countless hours into making it not only a great wheeler and very dependable DD but also looking nice, and exo cage would be like taking a brand new aston martin and rattle caning it cause you wanted a different color

Ok, I think everyone knows i am a fan of Outdoorlogic and his work so you know I was going t0 have some input..LOL. Internal for the win if you ask me. I am running the 1st gen roll bar and even before I put it in never used the cargo cover so not sure about the concern there. Comment about exo because it is hard to drive home with the roof caved in? An internal cage will allow the roof to dent in but not cave in. Otherwise it wouldnt be protecting the occupants. I was really looking at the Rockhard 4x4 sport cage for the XJ and approached them several times to do the same for our Runners. While he is a great guy also he said he has way to much business from the Jeep guys to take time to develop for ours. I have not seen ODL design but have spoke a few times with Jimmy and think his design is similar in concept as far as not being intrusive into the compartment. Here are a couple pictures from Rock hard, and I believe having the harness cross bar can be made an option like it is for the Jeep. Again I have not seen ODL design but as with everything I have seen from his shop from full custom Jeep/rockbuggies to our Bumpers you can be the quality will be good and well thought out. Mine is a DD and @6'4 I want/need all the room I can get.

I WILL BUY A CAGE IF YOU MAKE ONE. Im almost 100% on that. I live in so cal. let me know if you need a truck or anything. I have been thinkin about building a cage really soon, but I always wanted to just buy a bolt in vversion and tie it into the frame.

PLEASE MAKE THIS!!!!! and somewhat affordable would also be a huge plus. I think using hrew and not dom or giving an option would also be cool..

I think it is a 1st gen that has been modified to bolt into the rear cargo area.
