3rd Gen Custom Fan Shrouds.. Let's see them!

I'm looking at ironing out all the little annoyances in my build and one of the things I want to do is add a proper fan shroud for the electric fan(s).

My goals are:

  • Increase effectiveness of the fans
  • Remove the need to affix the fan using bolts through the radiator fins (it makes my blood itch)
  • Keep the engine bay tidy (will double up as a fixing point for some cabling and a support bracket for some pipe work)
  • Increase A/C condenser efficiency
  • Look generally neat and OCD to match the rest
  • Be slimline, very slimline, - it needs to be to fit.

Viscous fan is long gone due to the engine swap and no option of refitting, so please lets not go down the route of viscous vs electric!

Show me what you have! :girl:

Here is what I ended up with. Got it from Summit Racing.

That's a great looking fan set-up!

I also see you have a supercharger, good move! Could you please provide more detail about which model Derale fan model you are using and how it
is controlled. Did you use the Derale PWM controller? Are the fans loud and
did you use a high output alternator to handle the additional load? Any
problems or issues with the install and how does it cool compared to stock?
I have supercharged 2000 limited and am thinking of doing electric fans also.
TIA for your thoughts on this!

That looks cool! unfortunately I doubt I'd have enough space for that.

Can you please tell my how "deep" the aluminium shroud is?
Does it cone with those fans? if so do they look like they could be mounted on the inside to save space?

Ah I didn't notice you had the 1UZ swap.

Here is all the information from Derale. They fit pretty perfect on the radiator side to side. They are a little deep and I had to rearrange how I had some stuff set up in my engine bay, because I had my ARB compressor in the way. They take up some space but not as much as I would have though. How close are you to your radiator now?

Could you post a few photos of the engine bay from different angles? I would love to get an idea how that fit in and anything that may be in the way. Battery, washer fluid etc

Sure, when I get home from work in the morning I will get them and post them up for you.

Here you go. Let me know if there are more angles you would like.

I have been driving it around town in mid 90 degree weather, am going to take it up some steep hills later in hot weather at low speeds to see how it does. Other than that... no.

Thank you for the photos. The clearance looks great.
2 questions for you;
1 do you think the battery in the stock position would contact the shroud?
2, What's your wiring set up for it?

Sorry for the slow response.

The fan shroud should have no problems with the stock battery setup. I only moved mine so I could fit my ARB compressor there.

For the wiring setup I have them wired in to the Flex-A-lite variable speed digital controller. It works pretty well and i don't see a reason to get rid of it. I might get a second one and run each fan at a different temperature range. We will see, they are kinda spendy. I have also considered finding an OEM temperature controller from another vehicle, I just haven't had much time to research it.

Mega thread resurection!

I'm still about, have some changes planned (3UZ and 6 speed) and thought I'd revist my cooling.

As time has moved on, has anyone tried one of these?

Picture looks a bit "AIish" - but 4 x 10" fans coule bea nice low profile soution as they can pretty much sit right next to the core.

Any pics of the real product installed?

Thanks.

Wondering what the amp draw of each fan is? I'd assume on a low end 15a each x 4 = 60a. That's what, 90% of the alternators capacity. With no extra passive airflow.

I've got a detailed thread about e-fan, it's buried though. In the long run, it didn't work, for me at least. And I ran a new camaro pwm e fan that pulls stupid air and runs around 70 amps or so at full speed.

I think Charlie and I came to the conclusion I more then likely had the sensor in the wrong spot. I'll revisit that mod at another time. But at idle it works fantastic and the ac function works great. It has a soft start function to not require a massive amp relay.

Thanks!

I need e fans because I'm not running the stock engine, I also need really low profile as I'm space limited. Been running a single 16" for about 10 years.

The quad fan option looked good to me as the shroud is very low profile as most of it is "open" and the smaller fans are thinner too.

The point about current draw is very good, I'll look into it a little further.

If I consider Spal 10" fans they peak at 8.5A - so 34A total. my new 3UZ altenator will be 130A. - I need to check what start up draw is as its not listed, might be more.

I currently use the inline fan switch in the pipe off the thermostat but going forward when I go standalone will probably use the ECU to switch the fan. That way I could run the top and bottom one in stages to ease start up load, or just run the top for AC etc.

Need lots of airflow as I have an large engine and trans oil cooler infront of the AC condensor, and may need to make room for a charge cooler rad too

If you decide to have the stand alone ecu control the fan, then go with PWM controlled fans. Spal makes some smaller fans then the 18 inch one I have. With PWM the ecu can soft start the fans and ramp up, thus not shocking your electrical system.

If you run of a let's call it old school fan wiring (temp switch w/relay) you'll need a high power relay, I was looking at this relay as it's a beast (can handle more then it's rated)

Relay

I've bought tons of connectors from Ballenger. As with corsa technic. Bot legit places.

Also as a side note. Most alternators stock and modded will not put out much amperage at idle. They need a minimum alternator shaft rpm. This applies to any idle high amp draw items, e-fans, sound system, winch as well. There are many ways to calculate the shaft rpm. You'll need the crank pulley diameter and the alternators pulley diameter and idle rpm and red line rpm. You don't want to over spin the alt as it will fry the rectifiers and brushed etc. Of course the battery will absorb most of the hit, but the alt will need to recharge it and sustain the amp draw.
