3rd Gen Custom Fan Shrouds.. Let's see them!

That is a meaty relay!

PWM fans do cost a fair bit more, and from what I can see very are low profile.

From a quick search, apart form being 3x the price the PWM fas are almost twice the thickness. - but most have soft start built in so I could effectively skip the PWM part if needed. If i had room for the added 40mm or so I'd just use a thicker fan shroud and a more traditional 1 or 2 fan setup.

Regarding load, I agree. I actually bought a module for the 1UZ VVTi ECU that was switchable and interfaced with the CANbus to increase idle in AC - On condition and ELS (extra load, headlights, blower etc).

I need to check if this will play with the 3UZ ECU. obviosuly I should be able to replicate this once I go standalone. another simple solution would be 1 relay per two fans, and add a simple 10s timer before relay two closes.

Car logic, up the revs to power the fans to cool the engine if its too hot and stationary :thumb3:

Thanks for the ideas and informed posts! - Its refreshing to get back to forums and away form the simpletons that facebook groups seem to attract!

No, not for a stock mechanical fan. Just make sure your fan clutch is working properly, it's 24 year old 4runner. The shroud works great, even better when you use foam to seal the edges (makes it more efficient).

We're talking about electric fans.

Regarding rhe depth of the spal fans, they do have what are labeled as drop in pwm fans, they are damn near flush mount and move the inner shroud and blades to inside the radiator shroud. Yeah they are pricy, but they pull serious cfm at low amperage with much more controllability. As most fans are either on or off.

Off topic here for a sec - I got rid of my cruise control, and I have a blank spot on the throttle body, I'm going to use one of those PTO hand throttles to bump up the rpms when I'm using my winch or air compressor.

You can do this 'electrically' by modifying the ECT signal too (switch in a series resistor). At least if you only need to bump it to the 1-1.5k RPM range. It will likely be less fiddly too.

That's cool. The reason I liked the 4x 10" setup is as most of it is open and full of fan the shroud can be almost flush with the radiator bracket, using the clearence between the cores and the edge of the bracket for breathing space. Maybe they offer a slimline one that I've missed.

The Hilux Surf diesel came from the factory with an "idle up" switch. although presumably that is just becaue diesels take a million years to warm up when its cold.

Were the original shrouds somehow insufficient? New owner of a 2002.
No Factory in good form is probably the best, but I don't run the factory Engine, hence needing to swap and my space limitations.

I don't know how much space you have between the furthest forward part on your engine to the radiator, but on the 5vz, it's the fan bracket hub. As that runs belts I couldn't remove it. The gm spal 18" fan clears it by a inch or 2. I don't remember off the top of my head. There are so many darn fans it can make your head spin. There are also oem spal pwm fans that are small and low profile, but I'm not going to dig around to find them.

I'd love to re-attempt my e-fan set up, but I have to many other projects going on now that take priority now.

I did consider cutting off or unbolting the camaro spal pwm fan from its shroud and make a diy mount/shroud. I may still do that as I don't like how I had to adapt the chevy fan to the radiator.

To answer your question, not much!! :naughty:

10+ year old pic but I'm stuil running this setup. - I hate fixing the fan directly to the radiator core.

When I do my big rejig am going to look at moving the engine down and back a bit, but I doubt I'll get as much as an inch of extra clearance.
