3rd Gen OEM Navigation Installed!

I have been perusing this forum for a while. I have a 2001 4Runner Sport and have always wanted navigation for it. I have seen the offerings as far as aftermarket and I was not impressed. My goal is to keep my vehicle as factory looking as possible.

Last week I stumbled across an item on Ebay that fit my needs perfectly. This was an OEM navigation unit from a 2004 Camry. This unit was brand new and has been successfully retrofitted in many other Toyotas, however never a 3rd gen that I know of. To make a long story short, I bought it, installed it, and it is AWESOME!!

There is a bit of cutting required to make it physically fit in the dash since the unit itself is about 3/4" wider than the factory deck. However the end result is well worth it!

Thats AWESOME! I want one in my 3rd gen too How hard was the installation? (other then the cutting, how was the wiring?)

The wiring was very straight forward. Since it is a factory Toyota unit, it plugged directly into the factory wiring harness. The hardest part was finding the Vehicle Speed Sensor wire for the Nav. I ended up finding that wire at the ECU. Other than that, its pretty much like installing any other headunit.

so its basically a plug & play deal? with that speed sensor wire being the only wire to tap into? im a bit hesitant to hack into the wiring, but if its like a basic headunit install (other then cutting the bezel to make it fit) then i might take the plunge.....cause that looks sharp!!

I'm not trying to sway you either way on this. However, I think that once you get this unit installed, you will wonder how you ever lived without it! Its a shame that Toyota didn't have this unit as an option from the factory when we bought our 4Runners new.

If you feel hesitant on tapping into the ECU for the VSS wire, you can just go to your local car audio installer or a local Soundtrack for assistance with that. Either way, good luck.

That is "WAY COOL" . My only question is what happens to the radio and CD player? It looks like it doubles as a radio, CD player also. Can you listen to a CD and use the map? If it does have a radio & CD player, is the sound any good?

It has all the features of the original headunit - AM/FM CD with all the features. The CD slot is behind the motorized faceplate. The only aspect that it is missing from the old HU is the cassette player, however I hardly ever used that anyway. The sound is about the same if not a little better than the old stock headunit.

Hey Lotsamula,

Nice work on the Nav install. Did you do the install yourself? Do you have any pics that you took along the way? Also, does the unit mount correctly into the dash or double-din area without any modification except for cutting the outside border? I believe if I remember correctly, that the Camry NAV is two separate pieces. If that's correct, where did you mount the "brain" for the NAV? Any further details would be greatly appreciated as I'm seriously considering this option which would really assist me in my job (lots of driving from place-to-place).

I had an audio shop install widen the hole and install the unit. He allowed me to watch though. The Camry navigation is an all-in-one unit with the brain integrated. As I mentioned earlier, the hardest part was finding the VSS wire to tap into. We located that wire at the ECU.

Thanks for the additional info. Do you mind if I ask what the audio shop charged for the installation? Also, did they happen to wire it up such that you can input addresses and such while the vehicle is in motion or no?

The audio shop that I went to charged me $150 for everything. There is no way that I know of to bypass or disable the "safety" feature that you are talking about. This is automatically engaged when the GPS sensors sense that the vehicle is in motion. If you know of any way to disable this "feature", please let me know.

Question (if OP or others can help):

So this unit is for sale on eBay right now - looks like it'll fit my 2002 almost perfectly. I'd really like the option of Nav but there's a disclaimer on the eBay sale page that says it will only work in JBL-ready vehicles. Anybody know anything about this? Per the OP it's plug-n-play, minor modification to the trim.

the JBL units are NOT PnP to your truck, completely different setup and connectors. the JBL units require a JBL amp to be PnP, which you do not have.

now, if you would like this unit, i actually have a JBL amp. i know what your thinking, i just posted the above to sell my amp, but i did not.

i currently have the JBL setup in my '05 4runner and wish i did not so that i could easily swap in a scion unit (which would be PnP to your truck).
