3rd gen purchase questions

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and have begun my search for a 3rd gen 4Runner. I started out looking for a 2nd gen manual transmission but have since shifted my focus to a slushbox 3rd gen.
The car I'm looking at is a 96 with 180k miles. The current owner says the only issues are a broken rear hatch handle and the bolts have been removed from the sway bar. How difficult would it be to fix these problems? Any red flags I should look for other than those listed in the buyer's guide?

New sway bar endlinks would be around $30-40 US or if you find bolts for the endlinks that might be with the vehicle wouldn't cost ya much... The hatch might take some funds...

But this thread is :worthless

Pictures? details? Interior condition? Exterior?
 
Pictures from the ad are crap, I'll be sure to post up some pics when I pick something up. This particular car is Green/Gray, paint looks decent.
 
Here's another I'm considering. The mileage scares me a little since this will be my DD while I go back to school but I like the price, color, and the rear locker.
I'll be doing some occasional towing then hopefully turning it into a dedicated off roader once I no longer need it for DD duties.

Looks like a nice one... He probably means 272K, not hundreds, but thousands...

Even then, these things are supposed to go to 400K easy, they have some pretty bulletproof engines.
 
I'd stay away from the 2nd one with that many miles, especially if you're going to be traveling a lot. Plus, with the aftermarket bumpers and MTs, chances are he wheeled it, which means even more wear and tear. I'd keep searching, one will always pop up, they always do.

I'm concerned that the green one has been wheeled as well considering the sway bar has been disconnected.

maybe it just broke a link, so he disconnected it vs. replacing the links. I wouldn't be too worried about it, it's a very easy fix. When I bought my truck, the rear hatch wouldn't open because the latch mechanism was broken. I finagled it open, and found that the release latch had worn down over the years, so I made a little bracket to stick in between the little release finger thingy and the latch itself. It took about 5 minutes, and it's been good as new ever since. I have this absolutely crazy mindset about figuring out how things work, and I'll do everything I can to repair something before I replace it. So far so good.
 
Programming instructions look easy enough. I'm going to scan eBay to see if there are any cheaper fobs available before getting one from the dealership.
