3rd Gen Seat Belt Assembly and Part Compatibility

I'm looking to replace my seat belt assembly on the driver's side and apparently there are multiple different assemblies that were manufactured depending on the year the 3rd gen 4Runner was assembled.

From my understanding, there may be up to 5 different assemblies for the 3rd gen. My question is, does anyone know what the differences between these seat belt assemblies are and if they are interchangeable? It seems like it should just be a bolt on part.

I have a 96 and need some seatbelts.

I'd imagine 96-97 are the same, then maybe 98-02.

If possible, could someone post a pic of they're year seatbelt connector by the windows (up top)?

'99+ have the explosive squibb pre-tensioner. Earlier years don't.

Other than that, I have no idea how they got to five.

Personal Opinion. I wont use used safety equipment to protect my life in my vehicles. I know it can be expensive, If you get the part number you can shop around and even camelback gives a good discount i think they do 22% off of list plus free shipping.

For the driver's side, the 96-98 (mid-98? depends on your VIN) oak trim part number is 73220-35470-E0 which is discontinued.

The 98+ part number is 73220-35272-E0 which is not yet discontinued. This newer part appears to be compatible with the older trucks.

I have a 98 that's supposed to have the discontinued seatbelt. I don't buy used safety equipment and didn't feel comfortable trusting an unregulated 3rd party to repair it, so I bought the newer belt betting worst case I could replace the webbing. The dealer reached out and warned me that it's wrong for my VIN and there would be a fee if I returned it.

There are substantial differences in the retractor mechanism, the older one seems more complicated and has a physical cam above the roll. It also looks like it's supposed to mount on both the top and bottom, but neither the driver or passenger belts in my '98 were attached to anything on top so I assume this is for different models that share the belt.

All other parts are pretty much the same. It fits the mount perfectly and behaves as expected. It retracts fully and quickly, pulls out nice and smooth, and locks up when jerked or when I slam the brakes. The label indicates it was manufactured in 2021 which is super reassuring.

is there a way to check/test if the seat belt is still functional? what would be the reasons to replace a seat belt, other than a frayed or damaged belt?

also, is there an expiration date for the belts?

For my 99’, the front belts in oak are still available. The rears aren’t though, only grey is available now, at least for my 99’ VIN. My rear webbing was good. I removed the webbing and washed it, and just installed it on the new retractable. Works great now. I just need to get the other ones done. Should is finally getting good enough to do work after surgery.

Not sure what I’ll do with the belt webbing I took out though.

There are a couple of places that rebuild the retractable, and seat belt planet does webbing (custom also).

The OEM ones are kinda pricey. Like many of you though, for something like seatbelts, I won’t compromise. It’s the only thing that keeps you in the cage of the vehicle.

Seatbelts, power locks, and power windows all fall in that category of causing unneeded angst when having fun or daily use.

Sometimes they won’t retract well. It’s usually because the belt is dirty. Just washing the belt can make them more pliable. A quick yank should make them lock. There’s a metal ball that provides an inertia trigger also. Good hrs braking is the only way to test that one.

For the rear belts, you sh out I’d be able to pull them all the way out, that triggers the child seat mode in the retractor and creates a locked mode if you will for car seat usage for children. Once the belt goes in most of the way, the locked mode disengagement occurs and the belt resumes normal function.

It really depends on if yours calls for the squib model or not. It think my squib retractable was over 300$ good guy price….

96 4runner here, i searched all over for a gray driver's belt. I finally have up and ordered a '99+ seat belt but it didn't fit, not enough room to fit in the B pillar. . That was last year, I'm about to order re-webbing service from seatbelt planet. We'll see how that goes. Interestingly i think it is possible to carefully swap all the small plastic parts and spring over to the older style retractor but...... Safety blah blah I chickened out.

I'm trying to find one similar - 73210 -35581-E0 , however it appears to be discontinued and everywhere / everyone seems to be out of stock. Does anyone have any ideas? I found the other 4 for this vehicle, but would really like to make it all 5!! Tahnks in adv for any suggestions

An update for 1996 4Rs. I just installed the front driver side on a 96 SR5. The correct part number in Oak is: 73220-35471-E0.

I heard from several parts people that the RH was the correct one for D.S. and that it was mis-labeled on Toyota's site. Also that all P.S. seat belts are gone. But since they told me the wrong part# I'm not sure if I trust the rest.
