3rd Gen Specific shocks all around

I have a 1998 SR5 4x4 V6 Runner and I want to change the shocks all around. I have read tons of threads and discussions about this topic, but sincerely I did not found any recommendations about specific shocks on 99 tall coils on the front and OME 906 on the rear (that had my 4RUNNER now) for every day highway and some occasional off-road and if anyone had this setting I will appreciate their inputs. Just get some KYB, Rancho, or god forbid upper end Monroe....anything with a good warranty. DO NOT GET BILSTEIN. You do not need them and they are seriously over priced. Yes they pissed me off...but that aside I'm on a one man mission to drain the Bilstein Kool Aid Glass from this site. LOL Actually I'm being serious....just get some quality shocks and your good.
 
KYB, rancho, Monroe. I've used all of those on customers cars and my personal vehicles. Not one is good quality IMO. Always felt overly soft or didn't dampen enough. I'd go procomp before the other three.

I've put bilstein on every vehicle I've owned and even my friends vehicles. Never had any complaints. I have never looked back or have had any problems with them.

If your not lifted or anything look into the 4600 series bilstein shocks

I put Ranchos on my pickup and they were overly stiff - like any 4x4-specific shock will probably be for an 85% highway driven vehicle. Swapped them for Monroe Reflex on the pickup and I'm happy for now.

I've had Bilstiens on a few vehicles they were designed for and liked them, but I never liked the price.

For my runner, I picked up OME 890 rear coils (rear was sagging) with NGTR-4R shocks with a longer rear brake hose from Toytec, and I'm still running factory struts up front with a 1" spacer.

Give the guys at Toytec a call, or keep researching here. Lots of options.
 
Taking the opposite point of view of the previous post, I really like my Bilstein shocks and firm ride. To repair my defective suspension, I first picked the OME 2906 rear springs and then studied the available shock absorbers. The following statement from the Bilstein installation instructions convinced me that the 5100's were optimally engineered for the moderate lift and spring rate of the 906 springs: *PLEASE NOTE: For optimum ride performance it is recommended that 2" lift rear coil springs be installed (220 lb/in) in conjunction with the 5100 series front (24-248730) and rear (24-249966) shock absorbers.* With an empty vehicle, the 5100's seem rather rough; half loaded with four people in the vehicle, they seem to smooth out and to be just right; loaded to the GVWR with 1300 lb in the vehicle, they get slightly bouncy on longer humps or dips in the road. Seems to me to be an excellent balance.

I cannot discern any problem with the original front springs, but I have always wanted a winch and I think I may try tall '99 front springs if I replace the front bumper and add the winch. My upper support (a.k.a. top hat) and cushions (bushings) and retainers (washers) are in poor shape, but at the instruction of Bilstein, I reused them. I will replace them with new Toyota top hat, bushing and washers if I install new springs. Toyota specifies a Lower Retainer, Upper Support, Cushion, and Upper Retainer for the top of the strut assembly. Judging by the picture of the upper support, it incorporates a large retainer and cushion on the bottom side to go next to the lower retainer; apparently the other cushion & retainer go above the top hat next to the Bilstein-supplied nut.

For the top mounts of the rear shocks, Bilstein supplies three washers and two bushings with a crystal clear diagram of how they are to be installed. The top nut on the rear was rather difficult to install. I ended up buying an offset 17 mm wrench to hold the nut, and a 5 mm allen socket for the ratchet wrench to turn the shaft of the shock.

906 rear springs are gonna be stiff AF. How much weight do you anticipate in the back on a regular basis?

whats wrong with oem? its really cheap and designed for your car.

My 4RUNNER is an SR5 4WD 1998 V6 and I changed all the coils springs for the 99 tall on the front and OME 906 on the rear, this setting give me 1.5" on the front and 2" on the rear, actually I have the 98 stock shocks with this setting but I am not happy with this, I want to change for a more soft and stable ride. Thanks for your response.

2WDs are generally pretty low to start. Kudos for sticking to that tire size. The bump to 265/75's is way more noticeable than people say it is. You only notice once you revert back.

I run that tire on both my vehicles so my chains fit both [emoji12]

OEM Shocks have come down in price over the last 5 years. Especially the cost of the fronts. I put in Tokico Trekmasters from Shox.com in 2010 and they are still working for me. I have no plans to replace them. I suggest new OEM from one of the online dealer sites, should be about $350 for a set (new OEM will be an improvement if you are still on 1998 OEM). Or get the Tokico Trekmasters. I have all stock 99 springs, so my rear springs are softer than the 906s apparently. I enjoy a soft ride and the Trekmasters ride nice for me. Not bouncy but plush and not harsh at all.

gE3536 rear

$369 at Shox.com. They were less expensive when I bought them 7 years ago about $289 IIRC
