3rd Gen Supercharger (What all is required)

I currently have a '00 4Runner SR5 4WD V6 ALL STOCK. Great condition. Well maintained. 2nd owner with 94,000 miles. Owned for a little over 2 years now and starting to get a little tired of the "all stock" feel of the truck. Looking to add on the supercharger to give it that extra kick in power. Since, the truck is all stock, and since I've never done any mods on any vehicle I've owned, I'm wondering what all is required when adding the supercharger. I haven't replaced my timing belt/water pump yet and I know that will have to be done here sometime soon.

If someone that has done this before could give me an idea of all parts necessary to upgrade and somewhere around a good cost estimate, that'd be great! My Dad and I are very capable of doing this ourselves I believe as he farms and works on equipment all day, and I've grown up around it all my life.

Thanks,
Jared

in short, the SC is gonna run you about $3k new just for the SC, figure about $1800 for one used -but it might need to be rebuilt -that could get tricky as parts are not typically stocked or listed at auto parts stores... then there is colder spark plugs $60. you will want a lower temp thermostate so thats about $40 as i think. you should use a URD 7th injector kit that runs about $900...

so in all you are looking close to $4k for a proper SC. about half the value of your truck for what 80hp... if you think its worth it.

And if I'm not mistaken, you'll have to run premium only in it moving forward or you could wear/tear the shit out of your engine.

One day when we're loaded I might do it myself, but it's a long way off if ever..

I see new prices around $2,750 for the charger, but deals can be had here and there. The $895 URD 7th injector kit takes care of the shortcomings of the stock fuel system. All-told, it costs some money, but my god, is it great to have. I haven't seen a change in gas mileage or any downsides other than the upfront purchase price. It just makes the 4Runner even better than its already excellent self. :)

4k is kinda high...I see 2nd gen (which can be serviced at home) around for $1000-1500. Add the 7th kit for $900, you're looking at $2-2500. Not too bad, the price you listed included the fuel upgrades, which will get you more than 80 hp...at least that's what I've read. It's definitely something I will end up doing.

SHHHHH! im trying to discourage him so i can have one you fool! :brick:

and i gave out prices for new...

i have yet to see a SC worth getting go for less than $1200, and that was a first gen that needed to be rebuilt. so obviously prices are subjective to where one is located, just like the price of the vehicle itself...

True on the pricing. Out east, 4Runners are generally driven by people who don't know what they have. We regularly see great deals on them and on parts. Hell, there's a mint 98 limited with up to date maintenance, no rust, and 219k for $2700...that'd be close to $6k by you guys!
There was a 2nd gen supercharger near us last week for $600 with all the stuff needed to bolt on...took 5 days to sell...by the time one of us saw it, it was gone.

a second gen SC with all hook ups for $600 wouldnt even make it to the classifieds before there was a line around the block for it... sheesh! :moping:

Thanks for the help! Knew it would be pricey, but I've also learned about the premium gas part, and that scares me away from the idea of the supercharger for now. I'll have to wait until I get another vehicle for my everyday driver.

On another note, I don't know many specifics about the service history on 4Runner, so what all maintenance should I be doing at this point. Since I've owned it (June 2011 with 74,000 miles), I've replaced the spark plugs and wires, brakes, accessory belts, starter, alternator as well as changing the oil every 3,000 miles. I know I'll replace the timing belt and water pump sometime soon. I've read about replacing the radiator or possibly just adding a external cooler due to "pink milkshake". Is it worth while to replace the radiator or to add the external cooler? I believe my whole suspension needs to be gone through as my rear-end sags as well. I also believe I might have some sort of exhaust leak (hopefully just a new muffler) as my 4Runner has more and more of a purr as time goes on. It can especially be heard when pulled up next to a wall on the passenger side.

I'm not scared by any of this, it's just part of owning a 13 year old vehicle that is still running on mostly stock parts.

Any suggestions on what all I should do to make sure my 4Runner is running in tip top shape and so I can prevent any future breakdowns?

The premium gas isn't something that should be too bad. It's 20 cents more a gallon and filling up at say around 15 gallons is only $3 more a fill up. If you fill up once a week that's like $12 a month. I don't see that as a big turnoff.

Lol. OP is thinking of a 3k supercharger. But gets turned off on premium fuel.

Fwiw. All my vehicles takes premium gas. They also are high HP engines. The runner is the only one that is low HP and takes regular fuel.

I kinda like it that way. As of right now it does all duties. I don't know if its ever worth while to spend that much. If it were under 1k it maybe worth considering for me.

Anyhow I trying to fight. Not considering it. Ha.

Like everyone else said, about 3K and you should be all set. Gotta figure $2000 for a used one in good shape and another $900 for the URD 7th fuel injector kit.

This is what I run in my Tacoma and 4Runner and couldn't be happier.

Boost is fun!

alright. any suggestions on maintenance I should be performing? Trying to get as many opinions from other 4Runner owners...

Don't forget with having charged air, you're going to want to upgrade the exhaust as well (which from the sounds of it - no pun intended - you should do anyway). Maybe repair and upgrade the exhaust and kill two birds with one stone. That way when you're ready to pull the trigger on the charger, one upgrade is already done.

Does one need to use premium fuel if they do the meth injection kit?

As far as maintenance goes, I wouldn't do the new radiator with built-in trans cooler route. Get an external trans cooler and loop the radiator. If you kind find a coolant only radiator, then swap that in with the external trans cooler (Do Tacos have separate coolers?). Having an electric fan might be of use too. It may or may not save you space for that SC, but it is nice to have the fan come on when it needs to and eliminate a belt/pulley (again, saving you space). Definitely should change the timing belt. You have a non-interference engine, but that's still not something you want to mess with. Have you checked you air filter and MAF yet? I think 3000 miles is too soon, unless you're driving it really hard or do a lot of sand dunes.

Maybe you can do a CAI to take care of your mod bug. Again, that would be good prep for an SC.

an exhaust is a good idea, but its really not gonna do you any good unless you mate it with a good set of headers(doug thorley) and that means pulling the motor. that will do wonders with a SC and add a cat-back ontop of that you should be good to go with useable power. although i dont think at this time he has an exhaust issue -what the OP described is not of concern for me, the louder sound on the passenger side when next to a wall on the passenger side.. uh hello the exhaust exits on the passenger side, of course a wall will echo that more and make it louder. id suggest the OP gets more "intune" with his truck before he starts tearing into it and modding. id look at things like LBJs, and TBU -that sort of stuff before i went dumping money into bigger mods. to me the OP asking about rear sag tells me that he doesnt know much about the truck, yeah he is learning, but he has not researched very much as of yet -he is just a few questions away from asking "how big of a tire can i put on it".

yes you need to run premium fuel ,meth is ontop of that to help with WOT lean out. tacos and 4runners are the same from the cab forward so no tacos do not have external trans coolers. i would replace the rad, its old, even if it does not have a ton of miles on it, it has years on it, and it will fail. so replace and do an external trans cooler, and if you are even thinking of going with an SC go with a big trans cooler -a electric fan would not be a bad idea for it either, i have one and im not even SCd. dont do a CAI, they do nothing for our trucks, in fact in my experience they hurt the truck by sucking in hot air. hot air is less dense than cold air and will cut power -but it might fix your leaning out issues -joking, dont waste your time or money on a CAI, just buy a good high flow filter and do an ISR delete mod.

You're right. I am new to this. Half of these things you bring up, I have to research more in depth to fully understand what you guys are talking about, but I'm really interested in learning more about my 4Runner. I realize the exhaust is gonna be louder due to being on the right side, I'm not clueless. But, I said that becuase you can truly hear the "purr" more clearly when sitting inside the cab when pulled up next to something with the window down compared to just standing outside the vehicle. All I know is that it doesn't sound the same as it did when I bought it, and that I noticed it when pulled up next to something with the windows down. Even if something isn't wrong, I still want to change it because I feel like a "rice-burner" every time I pull away from a stop.

The supercharger is on hold at this time. It's good to know to redo the exhaust in preperation for the SC though. And thanks for the tip on the headers but the price ($725) i'm barely squeezing out the money for all the other repairs/upkeep I'm doing. Plus the price to have them installed. Called the Toyota Dealer in my area to get price quotes for true Toyota parts to put back on and....

Water pump - $143.89
Timing Belt - $62.55
Radiator - $296.84 (probably end up getting koyo for half the price)
Lower Ball Joints
LH - $117.25
RH - $128.90
Muffler - $565.24 (NO WAY)
Replacement Coolant - $31.72/gal

Are these pretty typical prices for Toyota Replacement Parts?

I'll probably end up with new radiator and external trans cooler as well. For the cooler I'm looking at a B&M. I'm in Kansas, so I get both cold weather and warm weather. I also tow a jet ski where with the trailer combined they weigh around 1,800 pounds every weekend in the summer to the lake 70 miles away. I know 1,800 pounds isn't much, but it's up down the flint hills for most of the trip. So would you suggest the 70264 vs the 70268?

Thanks again for helping out a new guy! I'll get around to not asking as many questions and posting some results sometime soon.

Does your car have rust?
You probably have an exhaust leak, that is generally what they sound like.
You could have either hit something while off road or it could be rusted through there are also some rare cases of headers cracking.
Hope that helps.
All the info is out there on the site, try searching around a bit and you will find it.
Have you read the sticky at the top of the 3rd gen page http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...ormational-threads-must-read-new-members.html

I think $3000 is kind of a high estimate. Once I get the 7th injector I will be around $2000. If you look around and are patient then you can find a good deal on one.
