3rd Gen Supercharger (What all is required)

an exhaust is a good idea, but its really not gonna do you any good unless you mate it with a good set of headers(doug thorley) and that means pulling the motor.

Sorry, I should have clarified, I meant header back exhaust mod. Do you really have to take out the block? Is that just for these particular headers? I found the instructions from dougthorley's website and they don't mention removing the block, just raising the trans slightly. DT Header Install Instructions

tacos and 4runners are the same from the cab forward so no tacos do not have external trans coolers.

So is there a radiator available that is coolant only? If the OP is going to do an external trans cooler, it would seem to make more sense to not have a radiator with the trans cooler built in, that would give it more cooling ability, would it not?

dont do a CAI, they do nothing for our trucks, in fact in my experience they hurt the truck by sucking in hot air. hot air is less dense than cold air and will cut power -but it might fix your leaning out issues -joking, dont waste your time or money on a CAI, just buy a good high flow filter and do an ISR delete mod.

Really? I could understand if somebody did a Short Ram, but called it a CAI, but if it is a true CAI, i.e. inside the fender well, wouldn't that give colder air = more power?

BTW, I found the DT headers on Amazon for $500. No idea on quality, or even brand assurance, but they are there. Amazon DT Headers

jeff88 yeah for exhaust manifolts or headers you have to at least lift the motor and slid e if forward a few inches ie unhook every thing. to get them out and new ones in. no there is no radiator without a trans cooler in it. even if you have a manual trans 4runner and go to the dealer and give them your VIN and order a radiator that way, it will come with AT hookups, all radiators for our rigs come with AT hookups unless you have one custom built, and that would be cost prohibitive. and no you would not see any noticeable cooling abilities. i have run a K&N CAI, probably one of the better names out there for them. they suck(literally and figuratively) hot air in from the motor compartment and sit just off the exhaust and behind the radiator so they are sucking abnormally hot air, not even ambient air. the factory air box collects air from outside the motor compartment and thus it will be cold air, while yes the air might be more restricted than a "CAI" it will be collecting cooler air and thus more dense air and the result will be more power. CAI might work on some cars like sports cars and the likes where they actually put the filters out in front of the radiator or down below on the sides of the radiators or up in hood scoop. but having one under the hood in the open engine bay collecting air that is being heated by the motor is not efficient what so ever, they just make a ton of noise and give you a placebo effect.

I see what you're saying. I'm glad I didn't need to replace my exhaust manifold a month back when I had an exhaust leak (it was actually a spark plug issue).

So I guess for our rigs, a radiator is a radiator, just get the right size (and preferably a Toyota direct replacement).

I think what I'm thinking about with a CAI is what you describe for the sports cars. I'm guessing the K&N you tried didn't draw air in from the fender well like those sports cars? It seems like the stock air system on our rigs is pretty darn close to a CAI on those cars anyway, so I can understand why you not see any performance increase or worst performance.

Tune? ECM? Does the 7th inj kit solve this?

I dont see anything about a computer. Is the stock tune with the 7th injector enough for a mild boost level?

Worst feeling I had was flooring my runner up a steep incline in the mountains in Colorado and nothing happening. Thats when I realized the need for a SC'r.
I built a 87 Fiero GT with a 05 Grand Prix 3800 Series III SC'd. That was the 5th gen M90 and I had a smaller pulley. I miss that whine! I can swap on a M90 for extra fun but Im not sure the boost a stock 275k motor can take. If its as reliable as the GM 3800's are then it should be ok for low boost.

Superchaged at 230k with urd 7th, runs like it just came from the factory, but you will need retard the timing and add more fuel to remove the lean out on a smaller pulley.

Like everyone has mentioned, when you buy a SC, you can run it stock, meaning w/o installing extra stuff. However, if you wanna maximize the blower, there's smaller pulleys, injector kits, cooler thermostats, etc.

No one has mentioned the additional, instantaneous load SC's put on the piston rings (so I just did).
There are no free lunches.. ever. :gun5:

Soo true picked up a ‘02 4runner sr5 4WD clean original owner with 113K miles for $3k n found out they would have taken $1K. Only in NY! Love this as my daily just did bigger tires new rims. trying not to spend too much money on it since i already throwing money @ my G87 M2
