Ok I've now found what I wanna do as for a rear bumper haha. I really like that. It looks super sleek and clean. How exactly did you cut and modify it?

Damn I wish I had pics to show what I did. I just cut the cbi sidings off with a reciprocating saw just down to the tubular part of the bumper and then kinda eyeballed where my next cut would be. It was tricky. The stock sidings unbolt from the bumper and you just weld a little bracket and bolt them on.

LOVE THIS. Been trying to think of a way to incorporate the factory corner pieces, this looks fantastic, and seems so wonderfully functional. Job well done sir.

I like it, but hack up a perfectly good CBI and replace it with the flimsy side pieces of the stock bumper?

Its more looks than functionality, but it looks amazing. I wish they made a bumper that could use the stock sides so no one would have to cut up a stupid expensive CBI

I had the same thoughts. I would rather get a shop to custom make bumper like this, or even, I realized, have CBI make a custom one without the sides, and hopefully be cheaper.
I haven't found great need for corner protection in my offroading yet (I'm sure now that I say that I'll dent a corner soon tho).
My thinking is this: I like the looks of the stock corners better than any other aftermarket solutions I've seen (nothing looks good when paired with the '01 sport full sized fender flares I don't think), I have yet to dent a corner (*knocks on wood*), and, these corner pieces aren't that expensive if they do get dented, and easy to replace being that they are already separate from the rest of the bumper.
I did have one replaced once under insurance cuz some silly kid hit me at college while backing his subaru up, shop told me it was a real easy replace, parts and labor came to ~$300. I imagine it can be done for 1/2 that if I do it myself.

This was a totally hit or miss way to go with these stock bumper sides. It was either going to work or it was going to fail. Here's my story on these. I was rear ended on the 4th of July, my stock bumper was mangled and so was the rear door. I just took the insurance money and said lets see what my options are. After doing a little research I found cbi had some of the cleanest looking bumpers. I still wanted my 4Runner to look clean but have a little attitude as well. So I ordered these cbi bumpers (without fender flares. I had removed mine because of damages) and they sent me these bumpers that stuck out on both sides about 2 inches. I hated it. Called cbi and asked them if they were supposed to stick out that far and they said yes. And I've seen so many rear cbi hybrid bumpers that were flush with the BODY on a 4Runner without the flares and I called bullshit on cbi. So the only 3 options I had were 1: find the brackets and stock flares (which is not easy) 2: live with it. Or 3: customize and make it your own and unique. So that's what I did. Yes they are little flimsy but they are very easily replaceable. I absolutely love how they turned out.
