My 01' has spent 230k of its life between PA and NY. Most of the rust seemed to be situated on the rear axle and somewhat underneath the rear spare. As long as it's not chipping 1/2 hunks and your differential hasn't developed pinholes, you should be fine. I freshened up my rear end by using a wire wheel to scrub off peeling and chipping. I then rolled on POR 15 on the whole axle assembly and a good bit of the undercarriage. I also noticed rust formation on the pinch welds on the chassis. I wire wheeled and applied POR 15 there as well. Looks almost brand new!

Thanks for the reply. We test drove the truck today and were not impressed. I hooked up my wifi obd scanner and the codes had all been resent just prior to our arrival to test drive. Has sound and feel of front wheel bearing fixing to go. we've moved on to another unit. It's got 148K on it. Having my dealer check it out tomorrow.

I'll check these out. Last time I found one and ordered it but was out of stock so assumed they were just gone everywhere. Coming from Japan might give me better luck! Calling Dallas today as well.

Just picked up this sexy beast Monday. I've spent the last 2 months or so trying to find an Xterra (I've got a predilection for Nissans) with 4wd and a manual transmission. I needed something that I could tow a trailer with another car on it if I needed to, I prefer manual transmissions, and since it's Arizona and this place is pretty much nothing but dirt (and we've got a bunch of trails on base), 4wd. The one on the lot got sold about 10 minutes before I rolled got there, so I was kinda down, but the salesman asked what I was looking for so I told him, and instead of laughing at me like the others did, he brought be to the back lot and asked if I'd be interested in the 4Runner. He thought it was 2wd, but when I looked under it, it had a transfer case, so I guess it was just a happy little accident on his part, wasn't even on the lot long enough for them to put it into their system.
I gotta get rid of the wheels because they piss me off and I gotta find a spare tire kit because I've only got one piece of the lowering tools and the spare tire is just kinda rolling about in the back right now because I can't properly mount it. Also before it got traded (by the original owner), the amp(s?) got ripped out so the radio doesn't work so that's next up on the list. I'll probably see about installing a CB while I'm at it. So far, it's been pretty fun to drive.

They're made all the more striking due to the fact that they were obviously installed by someone with a more... urban... personality. Whereas I've been told that I bear more than a passing resemblance to Jimmy Neutron...
