3rd gen values in northwest usa?

I consistently see higher prices on 3rd gens in the Oregon, Idaho, Washington areas than anywhere else. Anyone know why?

Same condition, miles, model and it is priced at a $1500-3000 premium, above something in the midwest or east coast. Not just ebay, but CL and other common sources as well. Makes me want to take mine up there and sell.

I've learned you REALLY can't tell the condition of a vehicle until you see it in person.
Also, I VERY rarely see pictures posted of the undercarriage- PNW cars and trucks have ZERO rust under them.
My '97 had 260k miles on it, and my '01 has 230k miles on it- neither had any rust underneath whatsoever. We don't use salt on our streets here at all. Ever.
So why?
Because they're completely rust free, and they are an incredibly solid and fitting vehicle for much of the demographic here.
Supply and demand.
The PNW is all about getting out and exploring. Lots of mountains, fire roads, forest trails, etc, and the 3rd gen will still outperform just about anything else built in the last 20years- including current models.
Toyotas are incredibly popular here. I personally know 16 people that own a WHITE '14-16 4Runner. 16! That's not including other colors, or all the others on the road I don't know.
I still see a good 6-10 random 3rd gens- just around town- on a daily basis.

I agree with Tyler, moving here after growing up in MI, these rigs are so much easier to work on without the rust.

Also, I don't think it is solely a 4runner premium out here. I consistently see most vehicles sell for a couple grand over most blue book/NADA prices.

Certainly seems to be the case. I just managed to track down a good truck for a decent price but it took a fair bit of looking. I agree the amount public land and lack of rust are major factors.

I think you can add California to the list... My search had me looking as far as Sacramento and the Bay Area, there were more cars but the deals didn't seem much better.

I found my '98 in Salem - with essentially still shiny undercarriage.
It was worth paying PNW prices - I guess as long as I sell it here as well!

Toyota = Premium Price
3rd Gen 4Runner = Premium Price
PNW = Rust-free (usually) = Premium Price

Stack all those premiums on top of each other and all of a sudden your 20-year old 4Runner sells for the same as a brand-new KIA.

I learned years ago that Toyota trucks (Runners and Tacos) are almost the only vehicle that are worth it to buy new due to the lack of depreciation.

Here in nor cal they sell all day for about double their kbb value. Tacos are even more expensive.

They are completely rust free tho. I have a buddy that decided it was more cost effective to buy a brand new taco then a few year old one. It Was about the same price. He ended up selling it a year later for close to the same price price he payed

Not that long ago I saw a 99 with like 170k manual for $6000 in Bend. I emailed her a few times but she must have sold it pretty quickly

Dodged the bullet

I found one in Salem in mid September that the guy was letting go for $3200. It was later in the evening and I told him I wanted to come look at it the next day so I could look underneath it. He told me he had someone else coming to look at it so me and my dad jumped in the truck and headed down. As my dad was underneath it he asked me what year 4runners had a frame recall. As he said it he looked over his shoulder and stopped mid sentence. I crawled below it and shined my surefire at the inside of the frame. Completely rusted out and had been painted to try and cover it up. I asked the kid about it and he said he didn't know about it. I called bullshit and walked away. Called Toyota and found out it was covered under the frame recall. I texted him and he told me it had already sold.

I literally dropped everything and raced down to K Falls the very next day to buy mine.

This was on a 4runner or Tacoma? You'd be the first person ever told there was a 4runner covered under frame recall.

I had my frame replaced on my Tacoma, took 200 days. From the TTORA forum, guys are out well over 9 months now. I still wish they had this for 4runners, can't figure out why they don't.

It's nuts around here. I think it's a combo of many things. We have a ton of hills as well as the access to the outdoors (specifically ski mountains) around here is amazing. Having a mid-sized SUV with 4wd/Awd options is really nice. And we don't have any rust issues as long as you're not living directly on the coast.

You should do a bunch of people and favor and get this in some type of writing from Toyota, because it would be amazing (they issued recall notices to Tacoma owners and started the check it out/rust proof/replace program so there was documentation)...I am not trying to be a dick, but I don't think there is any frame recall for any 4runner, if there is, there are a bunch of people here who would have taken advantage of it by now.

I've read it countless times as well. Just placed a call to Toyota to confirm. My frame is ok, but a few spots I may repair.

You're so right about the size... I'm sure it's been said many times but the 3rd gen hits such a sweet spot - roomy on the inside but doesn't feel too big on the trails / forest roads.

I live in the CA Bay Area and you can find really reasonable 3rd gen 4runners here. I got mine which is a limited 98 with 165k miles and the e-locker for $4,000.

Taco's are ridiculously expensive and smarter to buy new though. I originally was shopping for a tacoma but they were too cost prohibitive. You'll routinely see a 2000 with 175k miles listed for $10k-$12k.

I'm glad the tacos are so pricey though because that pushed me towards my 4runner and I love this thing!
