3rd Gen vs. 4th Gen Purchase Dilemma

I'm trying to decide between two vehicles. One is a 2000 4runner with 103k miles for $9750. All records current. Very nice shape.

The other is a 2003 4runner with 103k miles for $11950. Nice shape too.

Both have the six cylinder, 4wd.

Who has experience with both and can guide my decision?

Which should be more reliable?

Should I worry about the first year model with the newer one?

Under $12k is pretty cheap for a 4th gen with 100k on it so just make sure it doesn't have any hidden issues and under $10k for a similar '00 is a good price and right on target pretty much if the condition is nice.

Go for the 4th gen

Go for the 2003 4 Runner. I was looking for a 3rd gen 4 runner for a while when i came across a 2003 4 Runner. I wanted the 3rd gen but when i drove the 2003 i knew i wanted it. I have had it for 3 years now and put 46k miles on it with no problems. The 4th gen's are great, with more room and horse power you cant go wrong. For a few thousand more dollars, you cant go wrong. :driving:

I was very content in my 97 SR5 2WD for several years. Tight, fun and easy on repairs. Now I have an 07 Sport 4WD. It is powerful, a bigger vehicle more comfortable and safer. Roadability the 3rd generation is fun, steady and competent with the right tires. Same for the 4th generation but with additional power at your foot that is a key advantage. Comfort is higher in the 4th gen. IThe 03's have had a few issues with smells, sunroof and rattles. You may want to check those threads here. The 3rd gen were bulletproof in my estimation would run 4ever. If you want the power and comfort I would recommend looking for an 04 and see what you can do price wise as the 03 was the first model year and since $ are a consideration getting into a warranty on an 04 might be an advantage.
