3rd Gen vs. Pine Tree

Here are photos from my accident on the 3rd. I hit the tree so hard that it spun my rear end around, and popped the back glass out on another tree.

NOTE: My airbags never deployed. Not sure if this is concerning… but I did suffer a mild concussion, and some bruised ribs. Lucky to walk away from this, however.

Denuz PM me on here if you still have the truck I would like to talk to you about the trailer hitch if it is undamaged! I am back on Lynchburg all the time.

Glad you're ok. Driving too fast, or did something else cause the accident?

It was raining pretty bad, late night... no shoulder on my back roads, and a deer ran out, distracted me for a second, I got 2 wheels off the road, and I over corrected back onto the road, went into wet grass and slammed into the tree. Stupid deer. I was doing maybe 40.

I showed the pics to a buddy here at work who used to design airbags for Ford. He was not too surprised the bags didn't deploy because the body seems to have absorbed the energy through crumpling and the area where the chassis rails are doesn't seem to have been directly impacted. The deceleration forces would not have been sufficient to trigger the bags. He said those kind of dead-center tree collisions only deploy bags in high speed events, especially with body on frame vehicles.
Glad you're ok though!

Missed ya

Glad your OK after that smashup. Churchill was quoted as saying "there's nothing so exilerating as being shot at and missed" Well, you totaled out the Runner and walked away. Good for you.

Good info... thanks. I wasn't really sure. In this case, I think the bags probably would have hurt me worse!

When my son totaled my 93 Camry the airbag deployed, plastic shrapnel cut up his face and he could not see for 3 days.

t'is true - I never found out whether he was belted or not... He thinks laws don't apply to him.

I'll never understand this. It's a law, but that's not the important part. It should be common sense to put a seat belt on. It's the number one safety device in a vehicle. Glad he was OK.

Yep - I can't drive without it - feel like I'm going to fly out of my seat.
