So I've been looking into putting a 3inch lift on my 96 4runner. I'm wondering what size rims and tires would look good with that. I don't want small wheels to ruin it.

Start here! Some people went through a lot of effort and put together some really good information.

That's more on types of lifts. But that's a good place to start. Most people run 32s or 33s with a 3" lift. Look at some build threads and look through the photo gallery to help decide what you want.

Where is NC are you located at? I am in the Raleigh area. There is a thread sticky that shows all the lift info that you need.

OP, Don't worry. No one was offended by your question. This does come up alot so new people generally get flamed for not searching 1st. I would recommend checking out the sticky threads at the top of the 3rd gen section. That basically has all the questions about your 4Runner answered.
But to answer your question, the most common tire size with a 3 inch lift is a 33. That would be a 285/75/16 or 285/70/17.
Oh and i can't forget the 255/85/16 because some guy told me that was the best tire to run.

you can run 35's with a 3" as long as you don't mind cutting and pounding

You may also need to run wheel spacers at least on the front if you plan on running the 285's and stock wheels. I have read a lot of rubbing issues on the UCA.
My solution is to buy the Light Racing UCA's as they solve 2 issues with lifting these trucks. The first is the rubbing with wider tires, the 2nd, and I feel most important, is to correct the Caster setting.
Due to the design of the front end on these trucks, the higher you lift the front end, the less caster angle you can achieve. When the caster passes 0 degrees or is a greater than 1 degree difference, the truck will drive really funny! There are many guys on here who are lifted with less than desirable Caster measurements on the front end. I won't go into the whole theory of how a front end alignment works, but having Negative caster makes the front end of the truck feel like a shopping cart at high speeds. I was unable to get my caster above 0's degrees, so my front end is very twitchy right about 65 mph, however if you speed up to around 75 it smooths right out.

I only found this out AFTER I had lifted the truck and was attempting to align it. I fought the front end for over an hour trying to get Caster to go somewhere near 0 degree's, then I jumped on the forum and searched for Caster in the 3rd Gen section and found a lot of posts about it. Unfortunately that information WAS NOT in the lift FAQ thread. I feel like that information should be added to the thread. All that it says about alignment is " go get an alignment". That's not really useful information to me. If I had known then what I know now about the Caster issue, I would NOT have lifted the truck yet. As it is I know I could lower the truck back down with some new shocks for the front and rear and just put my stock springs back in. Maybe I will pick up some used shocks off of a member who recently lifted! I still may end up doing that, as I got the truck driving pretty well straight, but I wore out the inside of the right front tire about twice as fast as the rest of the tire. However, I LOVE the way it looks with the lift!

Something else must be up because i am ~4 inches of lift and have about 1 degree of caster.
