ok so im sure i should know this, but for some reason nothing is seaming factual to me about this :rockthrow:, so i come to you guys for clarification.

will a stock 3rd from the front of a solid axle mini truck work in the rear of my runner. something is telling me no but then again, its not a high pinion so the gears should not be reverse cut, so maybe.... anyhow i have a chance to get a 85 strait axle 430 3rd, and use that while i rebuild the one i just grenaded in my runner this am:ybrick:

'79-85 Trucks and 4Runners all have 4-cylinder engines and use what most call the 4cyl 8" diff in the front (the same one they use in the rear)

'86-95 4cyl Turbo and V6* trucks and 4runners, and ALL '96+ 4Runners use the Toyota 8" 4-pinion differential in the rear. This diff is known as the "V6/Turbo diff."

Sorry man, won't work.

ok... i knew that the front diff was swappable in the mini trucks, but i wasnt sure about to others... thanks -the 3rd had already sold anyways. i guess its just time to shell out the cash for a new set of gears... :roadkill: i think im gonna go with 488s and yukon, unless someone can talk me out of it...

any advice or imput from those who have been over this road, -i know how to set up gears, just have never regeared my rigs so some tips and tricks might be helpful

Why don't you look at East Coast Gear Supply for a regeared front / rear diff. That's what ARKRWLR did. His build thread is here. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/92541-arkrwlr-jwaldz-99-4runner-build.html

That way you know they are set up correctly and it would take a lot less time to swap a 3rd or front diff than to redo the gears too.

i know how to set up gears, and have the tools to do so... i dont need new carriers and have a spare front clam shell... paying ECG $640+ to do something at only one end that will cost me $500 to do for both...

sorry kid, completely forgot, i was around a fire pit when i got your message.
call these people and ask for Carl montoya 509-888-2953 or 866-349-6801
and see what he can do for you, i don't know what you wanted so i just asked for a complete 4.88 gear set with master install kit, you're better off just giving them a call and seeing what they can do for you as i really don't know what you need for sure and what you don't. chances are if you go through east coast gears you may end up with the nitro stuff anyways as from my understanding they use nitro in alot of their stuff now, but really those are questions for carl as i just take this stuff in over a bunch of beers so am not 100% sure of the run down. take 20 mins and give them a ring. i told him you might be calling today.

NITRO Toyota 8" Gears

IIRC it will work, the v6 3rd will bolt into a 4cyl housing. and that says the 96+ is the v6 carrier. the difference is in the carrier itself.

its been quite a while since swapping diffs tho, so i might not be remembering correctly...

edit:

from that link,
** V6 diffs are swappable with 4cyl and high pinion diffs

and,
96-up 4runner V6 diffs:
- new improved housing that looks the same as the T100/Tundra/Tacoma diff on the outside, internals are all the same as the regular V6 diff
