3rd row seating

I am a 3rd gen owner (2002 SR5) and I love my truck, but we now have two kids in car seats and I would love to trade mine up for a 2003+ with the 3rd row seating. I think I may have incorrectly assumed that all 4th gen 4runners come equiped with that. As I am looking at for sale ads, is there anything special I should be looking for to ensure it has this option? Do all SR5's have it, or did it only come with the V8, or was it strictly just an option that anyone could have ordered?

I have an SR5 with the 3rd row seating 2007. Not all of them come with it. I specifically looked for one with the 3rd row.

There is not much room back there though. My intent is to have the kids back there if necessary or their friends when they get older.

It's a nice option to have. I just can't really use them right now because the baby car seats are in the middle row thus preventing access to the 3rd row.

If I need a 3rd row I don't think I'd be looking at a 4runner. It seems as if it would be too tight back there. I'm sure there are better options on the market.

Would the 3rd row be big enough to fit car seats in? Is that even an option? My kids are 3 and almost 1, so we're getting close to having them both in front facing seats.

If Toyota made the 3rd row seats that supposedly fit small to medium sized adults, I'm sure the kids seats will fit fine back there.

Let us know if it work out for you, and if so, post pictures!

I am curious about this - my kids are 5 and 7, and we hope to have a 4runner next year.

Oh, I'm sure that if you just want to put some small kids back there then a 4runner would work out great. I thought you need like seven seats for all adults.

They are not on any 2003 models, and not on any sport models.
Other than that it will still be pretty rare to find them. I have them on mine, but I think I got lucky, I bought this truck without caring that it had third row seats, now I love that I have them just in case. I dont have any kids, I am 22 and usually use them if a bunch of us are going down town at night, we take my car so we only need one DD. Usually small girls (around 5feet tall) sit back there, it is pretty tight for anyone else. I would not put child seats back there, there are no anchor points for the seats back there either.

Well, there's the answer there.

Thanks for all your responses, that helps a lot. I'm not TOO worried about the anchor points, because my 2002 doesn't have any anchor points at all, I have to use the lap belts. But knowing that it wasn't an option in 2003 and not on the Sports helps. Thanks again! If I find something that works out, I'll be sure to let you guys know!

Yeah it only comes with the SR5 and limited models. Not on the sport. Which sucks because I wanted the sport. So I settled on the SR5 because of the 3rd row. But I wouldn't put my baby car seats back there. It is inconvenient and doesn't seem to be as safe either. But if you did you would have to use the seatbelts because there is no latch system in the 3rd row.

I have an '07 with third row seats and use them with a booster seat only. I too had a third gen and replaced it with a 4th gen for the increased room and third row option. I wouldn't use it as a permanent seat. I took the right side out and leave the left one in and use it for the occasional friends or moving the oldest back there when carrying a grandparent in the second row. A tall Britax booster (Parkway)with the head restraints will fit in the back to give you an idea on size, but I wouldn't attempt to move a front facing Britax Boulevard/Marathon into that third row.

Hope that helps.
