I bought a 2024 Limited this summer, and a friend pointed out if I lose or damage my FOB while traveling, I'm dead in the water. I'm old school, and used to keep a spare key when traveling. I'd like to keep my second FOB locked away at home, and carry a third FOB in my overnight bag, with battery removed, but ready to go. Is the dealer my only option for this third FOB? I see plenty of third party stuff for 4th gen and before, but 5th gen not so much.

This may depend on which kind of FOB / system you have. The keyless entry push button start may work differently than the push button remote lock unlock and keyed ignition I have in my 2013. However, folks in past threads seemed to have better luck (and cheaper) using a locksmith than going to a dealer. You should have been given a code tag with your FOB and or keys. It's the code used to program the FOB. You (or a locksmith) may be able to get it from the VIN. Things may be way different now since I got my 2013; but I think that's the way it works! There may be info in your owners manual as well. Guys were buying remotes and key blanks online and having them programmed by a locksmith; or getting everything from a locksmith.
If you have the smart key (push button start), there is no need to remove the battery from the fob. Just put the fob in to sleep mode. If you need the fob for any reason, you wake it up by pressing any key.

To put a Toyota key fob into sleep mode, you can do the following:
Press and hold the lock button
While holding the lock button, press the unlock button twice
The light on the key fob will flash four times to indicate that it's in sleep mode
To take the key fob out of sleep mode, press any button on the key fob.

I called a locksmith, and they said they would need a code from the dealer. I have that tag with a number somewhere...
I ordered an oem FOB online, arriving soon. I was at the dealer picking up oil filter cartridges, and asked the parts guy if they would program it. He said no. $600 for a programmed and key cut FOB. Then he confided that a locksmith visits the dealership once a week, and that guy would take care of my new FOB.
