3RZ 4x4 Oil pan leak? Gaskets?

I need some help understanding this engine. I’m not a mechanic and this is the first time I’m attempting to fix up my car myself.

I cleaned the undercarriage and discovered oil seeping from the seam of the sump. There’s tons of oily grim blown back to the front diff (I think that’s what’s connected). As I used my hand to scrape the 1/4” of greasy dirt off the rear or the pan and diff face, I got chunks of a gasket (or something) and I could see a flappy piece still attached between the pan and engine.

I am happy to remove the sump pan and replace the gasket but based on reading forums, it seems to be more than just pulling the bolts. Also, some folks say there’s no gasket on this model (but someone could add one- I only got this things a year ago).

So what’s the deal? Is a gasket necessary? Does it seem that this is the true cause of my leak? Do I have to move the diff to remove the pan!? ;(

If you have a lot of build up from minor leaks and dirt I’d suggest cleaning it all off as best you can first. Simple green and a garden hose will go a long way. Then after it’s clean and dry start watching for leak to identify where they’re coming from.

These trucks are known to have leaking valve cover gaskets. It could be this that is leaking down behind the engine and making it appear that the oil pan is leaking.

Mine is doing this.
