3rz Exhaust

Ok, I need to add cat back exhaust parts to my Runner. I have the 2.7 (3rz), non California emissions, so just one cat. Looking around, I noticed that the part numbers are different for stock replacement parts between the 2.7 and the 3.4. I'm assuming that the 3.4 exhaust might be a little larger. If that is the case I could put together an inexpensive cat back system for by 2.7 by simply using 3.4 parts.

Anyone know what differences there are between 4 and 6 Cyl exhaust stock exhaust systems?

Will 3.4 parts even bolt up to my 2.7 cat?

I don't know about parts interchangeability, but you could just have an exhaust shop fab you something up.

I was just wondering if there might be a small bolt on upgrade there.

As it turns out the tailpipe part is identical for both motors. The muffler portion I'm not 100% sure about but it seems to be the same too.

JBA or Borla systems are compatible with both motors too it seems like.

I believe the exhaust pipe is larger as well. I ended up using 2.5 on mine when I made my cat back system. Magnaflow 49 state legal high flow cat is 150 bucks iirc. If you can weld together the front part (meaning bugs for 02 and bolt adapters) and the muffler then most muffler shops will do the tail portion for 60-80 bucks.

The 3RZ and 5VZ exhaust pipe diameter from the factory is the same - 2.25in (I believe it was metric sized pipe, so not exact, but 2.25 is the closest standard size). The stock size on my 97 3RZ 4Runner measured the same as a friend's 02 5VZ 4Runner Sport.

All of the aftermarket catback systems are 2.25in all the way back except for the Borla/TRD system, which is 2.5 to the muffler then 2.25 from there on.

If you're staying N/A and aren't doing and head/cam work, I would just buy one of the catback exhausts, with JBA being the cheapest new, and in my opinion, the best sounding. If you're planning on installing a supercharger, I think 2.5in would be best, but supercharged 2RZ/3RZ trucks are so few and far between that I can't vouch for that setup personally. If you're planning on turbocharging your truck, go for a custom 3in system - the 2.25in piping of the JBA exhaust on my truck kills power and increases spool time.

2.5 will help even with NA as long as you are doing something else with the engine. My headers from lc are a 2.5 outlet and while I am not planning a monster I do plan on cams, valve springs, and a piggyback afm. Nothing crazy but maybe good for matching the 5vz stock.

if you are looking for a power increase nothing will help the 3rz like a set of long tube headers.

the current set up I have under my 3rz is an LCE long tube header, and a JBA cat back.

the JBA cat back sounds excellent imo. if you need a sound clip just let me know!

Thanks guys! In the future I may look at some performance upgrades. But for now I'm just trying to replace a rusted and blown out 200k muffler. I was thinkin that if it was an upgrade at all then it might be worth looking at. But since its all the same size...

I may just put a muffler in there right now since the rest of the system is fine enough.

Still curious tho, What kind of gains are you guys seeing from Headers, and high flow cats?

In my experience long tubes move the power band down in the rpm range, for a more torquey low end feel. ( I ran a really nice thorley on my Zuk, it made a huge difference! )

It's nothing jaw dropping till you tune it with a piggyback afm. Off the top of my head 15?? Certainly no more than 20. That's with intake, header, and cat back. I don't think exhaust would net much more than 5 by itself.

When you have a tuner that will add the rest of the 30 or so everyone claims you get from their one product lol.

The basic feel is that I climb more hills with fewer down shifts and the throttle response is much sharper. Plus there's a lot of noise.

the first thing you need to do is replace your cast headers before they crack look up toyota 3rz mini header

Yeah that cast manifold is long gone! Mini header was one of the first parts I bought for this truck. I don't know if I gained much more than some peace of mind from it, but that's enough.
