3vze popping

I have searched and searched until I"m blue in the face, google, youtube and all the toyota boards have no answer for me so I'm posting up in hopes for help.

I recently had a HG go, so I pulled both heads, sent them off, had a couple of lobes boogered so I got new cams.. brand new... those went with the heads to the machine shop. verified my rotating assembly, cleaned everything up flushed the fluids... etc etc.. reinstalled everything as per FSM, with the exception of installing brand new ceramic coated headers.

Now I am having some troubles..
It runs great.. at 30+ btdc. a little rough at 10-12 btdc. The kicker is I'm getting a LOUD pop.. either 3 or 5 is actine like the exhaust valve is stuck open or something else is WAY off. it comes and goes as I mess with the timing.. which would lead to think it may be something other than the shims. The machinist told me the clearances are all within spec, and is getting agitated with me, i fear for asking him if he is certain he clearanced them to spec.. he did a 3 angle at the same time, but I have not verified anything other than them being visually cleaner and having the new cams in before reassembly..

I can get it to run great at and extreme advance. I have pulled the front of twice now, thinking I was off on the cams. verified it is all 100% timed and verified timing as per FSM, and it still pops like a shotgun from the passenger side bank...
I am completely lost as to what is causing it and wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas before I tear everything down again. This is my primary vehicle and I creamed some awesome person that decided to pull out in front of my crawler that I had been driving to work.. so now I"m flat on my bum until I can get the 4runner going again.

Its a 1992 3vze 5spd.. new cams resurfaced heads, 3 angle vj, headers, everything else tanked and cleaned up, injectors rebuilt.. thats about all I can think of. Thanks in advance.

That nearly sounds like you may be a tooth off with the TC.. but not, because you should feel it tug thru your revs in a nasty way.. I'm kinda clutching at straws here, but figured any suggestion may help you pin-point.. I would take a look into the alt too, voltage reg may be bad (these are both stupid suggestions but worth looking at.. and all I can think of currently...) can you hear any high pitched valve blowback?

Everything is worth ruling out, for sure.
Thank you for the reply.
Thanks to the headers I can at least pinpoint it down to it being on the odd bank, 1,3,5. Sucks that the upper plenum is over that valve cover.. It may all come apart this weekend.
