3VZE year compatibility

Hey guys, sorry if this has been covered already but I couldn’t find anything.

My 95 4Runner has a blown head gasket and has overheated several times so I opted to swap it with a used 3VZE because I don’t have the cash to swap a 3.4. I found an engine out of an 88 4Runner and my question is will it be compatible with my ECU, wiring, sensors etc? I believe the knock sensors were changed a few years into that generation but other than that I’m not aware of any changes. Thanks in advance for any advice you guys have.

A lot of minor things changed, connectors for one.
You might have to splice some connectors onto your existing harness

Awesome thanks. I actually ended up not being able to pick that engine up since I live in Commie-fornia and can’t put an older engine in my vehicle so I’ll be going with a rebuilt now
