4.0L in 1st gen engine swap

Hey before this post gets flamed on.. let me say if you dont have anything nice of informative to post, get over yourself.. not everyone is as smart as you thats why there are these forums.. thats what forums are for....

Ok well.. i know theres been engine swaps before, from 3.0 to the 3.4 motors but i personally dont like the 3.4, still under powered. But i do Like the new 4.0L on the FJ cruiser, the new 4runnner and some of the tacomas. well i want that motor in my 88, along with the new 6spd manual from the fj's. So my question is. if i were to get the engine and tranny, how difficult would?
Also if i wanted a marlin crawl box would i have to get an adapter? or would i have to get an entirely new setup?. Im trying to do research but no one seems to have done this yet.. Im gathering infoarty:

Plus id get better gas mileage. lol.

If I ever swapped anything into my 3rd gen it would be a 1GR, definitely an excellent motor for both power and economy.

No matter what you wish to swap in, you need to first look at the physical dimensions to see if it even fits. As for adapters, they're all listed by transmission or engine on sites like Advance Adapters, so there's no guesswork involved. The toughest part about any swap is making the electronics live, and how adept are you at following wiring schematics, soldering proper connections, routing those connections for the long-haul, etc.. The rest is simply how much you're willing to spend, and how much work/fabrication do you need to farm out to others.

And then there's the cooling and exhaust changes, driveline changes.
It can be a lot of work. If AA has the adapters to do the swap its a bit easier, otherwise you have a lot of fabricating to do.

I personally don't care for that motor. To me it seems marginally more powerful than a 3.4, despite what the numbers suggest, and the mileage drop is big between the two. I'd much rather have a 3.4 or 2UZ 4.7 than the Toyota 4.0

haha your nuts. as a tech, i drive 4.0 all day long and can tell you a 4.0 has tons more HP. plus the 4.0 can handle much more abuse the than the 3.4, sure the 3.4 is a good motor just like the 22re but guys with 22re are swapping for 3rz for a while now. the 4.0 is a really good motor and definitely see it being swapped in more and more in the future.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. It has about the same power / torque as a s/c'd 3.4 (with no other mods). It also gets better MPG.

I had a 2002 Tacoma 4x4, TRD, 3.4 V6 manual sold it for a 2009 4runner 4x4 4.0 V6. And the 4.0 V6 has much more power than a 3.4 V6 that my old Tacoma had. I dont miss the 3.4 at all powerwise. Reliability wise it may be more reliable than the 4.0 due to some head gasket issues some have had.

Being on expedition portal I can tell you guys with 3.4 generally sell and buy the new taco or runner with 4.0

Early 3.4 had hg issues as well

Driven a 3.4 with 150xxx compared to a 4.0 with 150xxx miles. It feels as the 4.0 hasn't lost any power
