Hey all,

Long time lurker decided to join. Currently have a 99T4R with 325k deciding to add another to the family. I'm looking at a 2003 4.0 v6 with the 4 speed auto. My question is this, is the 4Runners 4 speed automatic the same as the tundra 4 speed automatic that is notorious for problems? Planetary gear I believe? Any light shed on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

I don't believe the '03-04 Trans is the same A340 unit, I could be wrong though.

Edit-

It actually does look like it might be the same A340E unit, but I'm not sure if that's the one you're talking about?

I thought the four speed behind the early V6's was supposed to be a robust unit? Damn, I need to stop reading all these forums for my different rides, I guess every vehicle I own or want to own is a pile of **** waiting to break down and suck all of my money out of my wallet.

Seriously, I have ~83k miles on my 03 and there have been no signs of any trouble, I just wish I could turn off that adaptive learning how you drive **** so it would just act like a four speed automatic, it can feel weird sometimes when it is trying to keep up with how I'm driving in town. One minute I'm cruising like normal and the next I'm flogging it to get around some ghetto mobile doing tricks in the road then back to normal cruising then I get a wild hair in my arse to go fast on this street and the whole time the trans is slightly changing its shift points and probably wondering WTF is going on. A manual trans option would have been SOOOOO nice. All in all, I've been happy enough with it. I'm not envious of the 5 speed autos and their one extra gear. I can go just as fast as them. :)

Trannies in any year 4R are robust and are NOT known for problems. Period.

The Tundra, unfortunately has had some (relatively small amount) of problems. They may share the same tranny, but maybe its manufactured elsewhere (?). As for the truck itself: The Tundra is manufactured in the USA, the 4Runner in Japan.
