4.30’s and 35s?

So I recently went to 35s on my truck. And I’m one of the chosen few with 3.91s. It isn’t terrible, I pretty much just leave OD off. However fuel mileage is TERRIBLE. I can get used diffs to go to 4.30s for around $700. Is it going to be worth the change? I know it’ll take forever to make up the fuel cost but will driveability improve $700 worth?

what were your original tires, you can calculate what gets you back to stock and see if that's close, or decide to go up some to help out the situation.

there are 100 gear calculators to help you figure it out.

For $700 I would wait just a little longer and buy new gears and maybe go 4.88 with 35's. Gears and a rebuild kit for both ends won't cost much more than that unless you don't feel comfortable doing the work your self. I just finished my Runner and went to a 33" tire with 4.30 gears and I personally feel like gearing is still to shallow. I would try to find something a little deeper than 4.30 with 35" tires and an automatic.

that seems like a lot for two diffs. I picked up a 4:30 e-locked rear for $200. I imagine a 4:30 front would be cheaper than the rear. are the ones you are looking at rebuilt?

IMO it wont be worth it. I would save some cash and get at least some 488s. Gas mileage is going out the window more because of weight of each tire. NTM the 3.4l will never get good gas mileage. My new 400hp daily driver gets better mileage than my 4runner.

I am running 33s with 4.30s and a supercharger. I wish my tires weighed less which is the primary reason I will most likely end up going from 16" rims to 17" rims next time I have to get tires.

As for MPG - I would go to 4.88s if you are set on 35s.

Yeah, you got lucky. They don’t sell for that cheap.

$500 for an elocked complete rear and $200 for a 4.30 front. I have a lunchbox out back right now and it kinda sucks with the auto. I never drive this truck off my property for almost 2 years except the occasional trip to Choccolocco Mtn which is just 25 miles away or so so I didn’t care too much about hearing as it was in 4lo 90% of the time. Now I sold my 4th gen and I’m driving the 3rd again most days and I feel like it’s breathing heavy on my commute.

Definitely not setting them up myself. I would pull the 3rds and take them to a drivetrain shop here local.

3.91's to 4.30's and 35's you will notice a difference, won't be where you want to be though. 4.88's and 35's works well for DD and offroad.
For a more offroad setup 5.29's seems to be what folks like with 35's, hwy rpm's in the 3300 area comes along with it.
$.02 worth
