GOt an auto with 4.10 gears, i thought it had 4.30's due to the fact that I had the elocker but after reading the door code i ended up having 4.10's. I have 33's and want stock power and to not loose too much in the mpg department as i use the freeway quite often. I have steel bumpers front and back and am planning on adding armor down the road as well as s/c it. Leaning towards the 4.56's but im not positive, I have the automatic by the way..?? Little help?

You'd hate your life in a hurry on the freeway with 4.88's and 33's, way too short of a gear in MO. You could go factory 4.56's and be a little short still depending on the actual tire size. I've got 4.10's and e rated 285's and my truck is fine on the interstate, it'll cruise 75-80 all day and if I keep it at 70-75 still get 18-20 mpg. If you were at elevation out west then it would be a whole different argument.

Yea I am with Snowy, I had 33's and the 4.88's and anytime I got on the highway the RPMS were way too high for me to feel comfortable, I would go like 65 MPH.
So if you are doing a lot of highway driving stick to the 4.56 gears, if like me, you get on the highway maybe once a month do the 4.88's

I have 4.88's, but I have 35" tires, I think 4.56's should be fine. You can figure it out a little more clearly by using this tire size/gear ratio calculator.

I've got 4.88s, and when I was running 265s it was just fine. Now that I'm running 315s, it's still the same.

No kidding...I love to know his secret for mileage!
I'm in the same situation as the OP. I'm running 33's with stock 4:10's...and anytime I'm on the freeway...just the smallest hill makes my trans start down shifting and hunting gears! This is hard on the trans because it cause a lot of heat, so I need to re-gear!
But, every calculator for re-gearing I've come across has put the gear ratio at 4:88 and now y'all are saying no way. I guess I'd like to ask those who are running 33's, automatic, and have 4:88...what RPM's are you turning at 70 MPH? That would be a huge help!! Then like [MENTION=76419]Doc2012[/MENTION] said...we'd be able to make our own minds up...without spending $400-$500 to re-gearing, just the find out we're not happy!
So please help us...I'd like multiple guys to respond!! Thanks in advance...

Or, instead of asking multiple guys to report results, you could just grab an online calculator and get your own. There's one linked upthread, or I like this one - Gear Ratio Calculator. Plug in different numbers until you find a combo you like. Remember to use actual tire diameter if you can find it, most tires run undersize.

I agree with you Sir! If you had actually read my whole post, you'll see that's one of the first things I did. I went on several sites to calutlate what gears I should go with. This is one of the sites I used:

When I bought my 4Runner...wow...talk about a grandma's grocery getter...my tires measured only 28.50 and the tires I'm running right now are 33.25". I filled in the blanks and I'm told I should re-rear to 4.783...which the closest gears are 4.88.
Now that sounds all good in computer land, but things are sometimes a little different in the real world, therefore, I was hoping to get real world data like RPM's from guys driving rigs just like mine! So I know what RPM's real rigs are getting. Then I can make an educated selection on my gears...instead of spending $400-$500 just to find out that I wish I would have gone with 4.56's!
I assure you, wasn't trying to be lazy or just expecting people to tell me all the answers on a secret squirrel test.
Oh no no no...I better stay a way from you! My wife would kill me if I start talking about 35's or better yet, 37's!! Hmmmm...on second thought, I like the way you thing...lol!!

I can let you know exacts tonight if you need but I think at cruising speed on the highway im about 70, (65 on the speedo), and I'm turning about 2700 RPM's. (EDIT: 2500RPM's)
my setup is currently 305/70/16 MTR/K's (33.1" diameter) with 4.88's.
Its not bad at all and the down shifting doesn't happen unless im on a steep grade heading up into the mountains now whereas with the 4.30's it would downshift at a mild grade at those speeds. 4.88's and true 33's is very doable in my opinion.
Also, I guess I should add that despite my tube bumpers instead of plate, my 4runner is a heavy SOB. Bumpers, sliders, full skids, roof rack, cargo shelving, spare tire carrier, winch, etc. Plus the beadlocks alone add a ton to it at 50lbs a corner. Wheel and tire combo alone is 112lbs each.
Average mileage has been about 14mpg corrected with a 15 mile each way commute to work. The freeway is 1/4 mile from my house and 1/2 mile from work in traffic so not much time to heat up the motor before getting on the highway.
I should also add that I did consider 4.56's but with the change from 4.30's being so little I didn't see it being a large enough difference for the cost to do.
