4.56 or 4.88's?

Right now I have 4:10 .. My question is 4:56 or 4:88? Supercharger would be nice down the line

Thanks! Didn't want to start a new thread

Im glad I went with 4.88 when I did my regearing. Honestly, I'm surprised how little of a difference it made from 4.10. Im charged with stock pulley and I'm still not satisfied with the power. It's certainly better than stock, but I expected more pep from 4.88. I was scared it was too low, but glad I went with 4.88. I would have been disappointed with 4.56. My vote goes for 4.88.

To be clear, mine is not a DD. I drive it once a week if that. Though I don't think I would be bothered if I drove it everyday with the setup. I'm on 255/85 tires with winch, sliders, roof rack, and rear off-road bumper.

I realize its not your DD, but do you ever find the rpm's annoyingly high on the highway with that setup?

No, I don't even notice it. I usually don't cruise more than 70-75 mph on the freeway. 70 on the speedo(74mph GPS), I'm turning about 2650 rpm on the scan gauge. I've never felt like it was screaming, even at higher speeds 80mph+ when Im passing, but I don't normally cruise that fast. I've only had the regearing for about 2-3 months, but I don't regret it one bit. Maybe I would be singing a different tune if it was my dd. That was one deciding factors why I went with 4.88.

Now I just need to do some fuel modes and go with a smaller pulley on the charger. 4.88s will give you the option for larger tires, better towing capacity, and handle any additional weight better in the future.

Im looking for lower gearing offroad without totally ruining the highway driveability and gas mileage. Dual cases is what I ultimately need but diff gears would be so much easier.

Thanks for the info Toy2play ... Now that you're geared at 4:88 and charged, do you recommend the supercharger?
I've read and read and read about reliability on the supercharger and some say the stress it puts on the engine and drive train. Right now I'm at 215k miles. Going to be doing some cross country/off road trips and want to make sure I'd be making the right decision.
Thought about getting a 4th gen v8 or even a 5th gen but just can't seem to part with my 3rd gen.
Sounds like highway driving is still pretty good from your experience. I don't mind rebuilding my engine either, if that need be.

IMO, 4.88 do exactly that. I think 5.29 gearing would be a bit too low for 33" tires with auto, and would see a more significant hit in the mpg and rpms would be high up there. I forgot to mention that I have an auto, 5 speed with 4.88 is similar to an Auto with 5.29 from what I have heard.

I was hoping to gain a mpg or 2 with regearing because it felt like it was outside the power band, but unfortunately they have stayed about the same. Might be a hair better, but driving habits probably contributes more than the gears. The biggest killer of mpg was the 255/85 BFG KM2 I put on. Went from getting about 18/20 mpg bone stock to about 13/15 mpg over the course of owning it. Little things chipped away at the mpg; lift, roof rack, armor, supercharger, but nothing like putting my tires on. Being a secondary vehicle and more of camping/overland rig I'm not terribly concerned. I do wish the range was better, but nothing a couple of jerry cans can't fix.

I've had the same experience with mileage. I'm currently commuting 60 miles round trip every day until the end of the year so I put on some temporary 265/70/16 street tires in place of my 285 MT's. Went from 17 to 19 mpg, even with all of my added weight and lift. 19 mpg is pretty decent and theoretically, I doubt I'd gain much more than that if I were to strip my truck back down to stock weight.

In the new year when I no longer have to commute, I'll be seriously considering 4.88's.

I charged before I regeared so it hard to say if I would be content with just regearing. I probably still would of charged it but that's my personal preference. I don't romp on my runner and really only wanted to get more power out of it because it struggled up hill, in headwind, and passing when I'm fully packed down for camping trips.

There are many people that supercharge their 4runner with over 200k on it already and have no issues. Just run a compression check before and if the numbers are good, I don't see any issues with charging it. These 3.4l engines are built like a tank.
