4.56 or 4.88's?

Trying to decide if I want to go with 4.56 or 4.88 gears. I have a 2000 4runner that is 4cyl with 3.91 gear. I'm currently running 31.6 inch tires. It's my daily driver and I plan to occasionally use it when going out into the desert and fire trails. It is my daily driver, but my job is only 15 minutes away and I take the streets. So no regular freeway driving. With that being said should I go for the 4.88's to give the 4runner some extra pep being that it's a 4cyl or are the 4.88's overkill for my application? I forgot to mention I will also be getting an eaton truetrac installed.

4.88s will be an amazing crawl ratio. You should calculate your RPMs with 4.56 and 4.88 and see if you are comfortable with the higher RPM of the 4.88.

I think 4.88's might be a bit overkill for the size tire, but if you decided to go up to 33's.. You will want those 4.88s with that 4cylinder.

I calculated the RPM and if I'm correct using my values it was calculated to 2560. Does that RPM sound about right. Just making sure so I can make my decision based on correct numbers. This is with 4.88 gears.

I would go with 4.88 gears. 3RZ/manual/4wd came with 4.56 gearing stock so 4.88 with an automatic would be good. Automatic 4th is 0.71 and manual 5th is 0.85 so you'll still be lower rpm's compared to a manual with 4.56 gears.

4.56 gears were an option on 4wd 3rz manuals. My 4runners build list has it bundled with the 16 inch wheels, so it's not the default ratio.

desert and fire trails? I would save some monies and go for some used gears out of a elockered rig that had the 4.30's, espeically if on 31's.

I have 4.56 with 32s, manual.

If I had an auto I would definitely go 4.88. I sometimes wish for 4.88s now!

Yeah I think I will go with the 4.88 being that I have the 4 cyl and I plan on moving up to 32 inch tires.

If you haven't run any numbers this worked to get idea of RPM's I'd be running.
A340F 3rd gear is one to one numbers are accurate to what I see after gear change.

That would be under geared for a 3RZ. Good ratio for 5VZ, but the 3RZ needs more rpm's to be happy.
