4.7 to 5.7

I would love to know if this swap is possible. If my 4.7 ever needs replaced I'd definitely consider the 5.7 if it were possible, even if it needed a bit of modification to make it work.

Then, for those of us that might be interested in the new 5th gen after a few years--considering that the new models aren't running V8s anymore--does anyone think it would be possible to drop a V8 in one of those?

Just getting some crazy ideas!

I know there is at least 1 V8 vortec swapped FJ on their forums. I don't see how it wouldn't work with a 4Runner, it just takes money!

So I had this same thought, cause I thought it would be so bad ass to take the 5.7L, Supercharge it, and have a 550lb/ft 4runner. It's just cool, but here's what I've found to be a problem so far.

First, the transmission. If you google around you can find the "new features" list from when the 4th gen first came out. The V8 T4R has it's own transmission. It's not on anything else, and it's got it's own ratios and blah blah blah. It's 5 speed automatic. I'm no mechanic but putting an engine that's designed to shift 5 times to get to the final drive with a tranny that only shifts 4 times is bad juju. I don't know that, but I feel like it is. Or at least it's limiting.

Second and highly related, the T4R V8's, as far as I know, are all wheel drive vehicles. They aren't in 4h so much as they are AWD until you lock that center diff. Correct me if I'm wrong. But, I know the transfer case is married to that completely unique transmission I mentioned earlier. I don't know but I kinda doubt the 2h/4h/4l transfer case will be compatible with it. Well, that's easy just replace the Tranny!

Third, That is, Until you go back in the cab and notice that it's L234D. No O/D button or anything. How does it know about fifth or sixth gear when you move you shifter? Someone's getting left out? I don't know I'm not a mechanic. But then you put it in D does the engine go "Oh, D, six gears, sweet!" but then you pull it into 4. What happens? Mystery...

I think it will either go down to fifth and then you realize that you have no 1st gear, or it'll go to fourth. This would be ideal (pf the two), cause if you needed fifth, you probably should just use fourth anyway. Can an O/D button be rigged so D is 5/6 depending on whether or not o/D in in play, like on the 3rd Gen? I don't know....

HOWEVER, Toyota did produce a Taco with a SC'd 5.7L that had everything stripped for drag racing. (It ran like a high 12 though...) Someone is right because the 4.0L V6's are all 5 Speed's similar to the 4Runner. Something in that design says this is possible, just complicated.

This has been the spouting of a random guy who's thought about this for a long time without a professional opinion.
