4.7 V8: Misfire on cylinders 2,4,6, and 8

I have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner 4.7L 4WD. I have been dealing with the same issues that the OP mentioned (rough idling and acceleration, multiple cylinder misfires, won't start etc.) I have had several mechanics look at it and suggest different causes or sources for these problems. But as I work on this I keep returning to this post. I'm going to take it to the mechanic and have him replace timing belt and do a complete check. Lets hope for the best.

Dude. Glad you got it fixed. I picked up a 4th gen V8 with 181,000 miles on it this past summer and no timing belt or anything had been done to it before. Had the timing belt,water pump, etc. Done immediately. Glad you avoided any major repairs to it!

I took it to the “Timing Belt Master” in Dallas. After resetting the codes from my last mechanic visit, the check engine light had just come on. He read it, and said that it only ready catalyst error. I insisted he check the TB. He took off the cover and saw that it was in time. I told him about all the BS I had tried to fix this problem and how the codes kept coming on. Anyways, I’m going to have the catalytic converter changed on bank 2 and have him take the belt off and visually inspect. It’s been a wild ride and I’m ready to get her back to the beast she is.

My rig came to me around 280k miles and it was 180k miles overdue but the timing belt looked fine, not about to explode or anything. These belts are robust and long lasting for the most part if they're a known, high quality brand. The timing belt looked *ok* (to the untrained eye), pulleys were smooth and there was a tiny drip started out of the H20 pump. the rig was owned by a salesman who drove all over CO, NM & AZ.

Just another data point for people to consider.
