4.88 yukon gears

front and rear gear sets with master install kits for 1998 tacoma with e locker
brand new still in boxes


Ok guys, I have a golden opportunity of buying these from a guy in town and I just want your opinions as to whether or not I can use it on my 97 also with e-locker. I was given a quote of $900 tax in just for parts from a local Off Road shop but the guy's giving it away for $500 maybe even a few more penny less.
$400 savings is alot.

I have the part numbers for the Rack & Pinions and both the Master Overhaul Kits from the shop but I'm still awaiting the seller's part number verification as soon as he gets home today at 5:00.

Whats the question? That is a smokin deal for FR & RR w/ installs! The Tacoma e-locker diff and the 4Runner diff are the same so you will be fine. For more info on diffs (just so you can feel more confident about your purchase) check here:

So you're saying and also according to the link you provided that the 98 Tacoma and 97 4Runner's gears are the same so long as they both have e-lockers, and therefore I can use the 4.88 FR & RR he bought that was origin'lly meant to go in his Taco?

Sorry for not clarifying Mauzer but that $900 is just for parts from the shop and to include labor and supplies it's another $1000. I'll have to find a different shop to install them in case.

Yes, the 3rd member used in both the Tacoma and the 4Runner are one in the same. The e-locker axle was used in both models that offered that option.

And I didn't mean installation, I meant install kits! Thats what gets most people who want to re-gear (besides the labor). The cost of the master install kit is just as much if not more than the gears themselves, so to get the FR & RR gear sets and install kits for $500 is a great deal. I wouldn't pay someone $1000 to do the install either, just pull the diffs yourself and take them to a reputable mechanic and you will cut you labor cost significantly. GL and congrats on the new gears.

Yeah I thought $500 is a great deal too, and I just wanted confirmation of the application. I'm gonna try and see him this evening and if they are what he says they are being brand new and all, then I'll have something with me on the way home for sure. I'll keep you guys updated here or in my Build Thread.

Like Mauzer said, they will be compatible with your diffs. $900 isn't a great price, I'm looking at my receipts and I paid $660 for my r&ps and both master kits for Motive brand. So $500 is still a great deal on parts, but it depends on what brand you're looking at too. If it's Genuine gears, I would pass and spend another $100-200 on Motive, Yukon, or Precision gears. Cheap quality gears and a good install is still better than good quality gears and a bad install, but quality gears and a good install is obviously best. Good luck.

It's just one of those deals that are hard to pass up, hopefully I can get them, provided the guy stays true to his word. 4.88 sounds awesome!

He did mention the gears being a Yukon brand but soon as he calls me I'm gonna go and check them out for myself just to be sure.
thanks Brian for chiming in, I know you recently had upgraded as well so who better aside from Mauzer to give advise and direction regarding gear compatibility.
