4-D gearshift position

on a 2008 4runner, the 4-D gearshift position has a sideways notch that you can move the shifter to the right... what is this for? does moving it to the right engage OD & to the left is just 4th gear?

Got a picture?? I thought all the gear shifters were the same for 4th gens...if so, mine doesn't have any kind of "notch"

To the right puts it in D (Drive) which allows the transmission to use all five gears... 1,2,3,4, and 5 (Overdrive). Pushing it to the left puts it in 4 and limits the transmission to 1,2,3, and 4. Back a notch to 3 limits it to 1,2, and 3... etc. All the way back and to the right is L... low gear which is 1st.

thanks for confirming that. this is a recent purchase & i havent read all the way through the manual yet. but on a short initial drive i noticed the 4-D slot & figured it was for OD/5th but didnt get to fast enough MPH to engage 5th yet.

You'll find that kick to the right comes in handy at freeway speeds, OD kind of, like the previous posts stated. But, it has drawbacks when the engine starts straining a bit on hills or such, so you move back over and so on....I like it. I was told a long time ago to not use it when towing/hauling stuff, but that could be wrong. Play wit it a bit and you'll find it's usefulness.

I've always used 4 when towing unless I'm on a long, gradual downhill, then I'll bump it into D for some lower RPMs.

Yeah, pretty much what I did hauling around dirt bikes or stuff. Honestly, like many of the 4th gen features, didn't know I had them right away. Just bought it to upgrade for my young daughter. Less truck like, at the time, with a little more safety and fun stuff for her in the back.

PS I had a 3rd gen before...

When the selector is moved down from the Neutral position, it naturally goes into D (allows all gears to be used automatically).
You must intentionally move the shifter to the LEFT to go into 4 (limits the transmission to gears 1-4).
The little window with 4-D is literally a map for that position. Same for the 2-L position, 2 (limits the transmission to gears 1 & 2) on the left and L (1st gear only) when it's on the right.
