on a 2008 4runner, the 4-D gearshift position has a sideways notch that you can move the shifter to the right... what is this for? does moving it to the right engage OD & to the left is just 4th gear?

Got a picture?? I thought all the gear shifters were the same for 4th gens...if so, mine doesn't have any kind of "notch"
theres a handful of different ones i think because of the 4 speeds in some 03-04. mines a 4speed and i have, 3-d (kick to left for od 3) 2 and L

To the right puts it in D (Drive) which allows the transmission to use all five gears... 1,2,3,4, and 5 (Overdrive). Pushing it to the left puts it in 4 and limits the transmission to 1,2,3, and 4. Back a notch to 3 limits it to 1,2, and 3... etc. All the way back and to the right is L... low gear which is 1st. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
You'll find that kick to the right comes in handy at freeway speeds, OD kind of, like the previous posts stated. But, it has drawbacks when the engine starts straining a bit on hills or such, so you move back over and so on....I like it. I was told a long time ago to not use it when towing/hauling stuff, but that could be wrong. Play wit it a bit and you'll find it's usefulness.
